Listen to experts on drug addiction issue

By Letter to the Editor on March 30, 2018.

I read recently that Jason Kenney is against the idea of safe drug addiction sites. It sounds crazy to set up sites to feed poison to people. But Jason is probably like me, fortunate enough to never have had any drug addictions.

We are looking from the other side of the fence. We need to listen to the people who deal with those addicted: The provincial judges, the police, the EMS personnel, the counsellors, the doctors. Jason, what sounds good is not even close; you need to listen to the experts on this one.

I find it unacceptable that we pander to drug addicts while doing little to prevent the problem in the first place. Worse yet is that drug dealers are not given harsher sentences.

yeah, the worst of the drug dealers – and the ones that have initiated the recent mess of increasing addictions and overdoses and deaths – are the big pharm companies that create and peddle the synthetic poisons they call “opioids”. prosecute; sue; lock up; and seize assets of corporations found guilty, under proceeds of crime laws. use the money to offset the cost of treating people in need with compassion…humanity. i see it as cold, judgemental, illegal and wicked to continue with the failed approach we have taken since the 1930s. i will further state i am not in agreement with chinook, nor gifford-jones et al on this one. keep in mind, as well, that heroin addiction is worse than opium addiction to overcome because the former is refined (from the latter), and fake opioids, such as those peddled by big pharm, are worse still as they even more foreign to the human body.
addicts of all types will always discover their addictions, and it is neither helpful nor the place of gov’t to criminalise adult behaviours around choices regarding one’s own body. all that approach has done is waste a lot of money and resources, as well as undermine the fundamental right we each have to our full personhood.
gov’t would do better to legalise and dispense, and thereby: 1) ensure drugs are real (not refined and synthetic) – which would greatly reduce addiction; 2) ensure the drugs are safe from tampering and are at a usual level of strength and purity – which would greatly reduce overdoses and poisonings; 3) ensure drugs are available at their real cost, and this can be done by growing various plants in canada, and by sourcing them directly from farmers abroad – which would make them affordable and eliminate the crime that often comes with addiction.
the crime associated with drug addiction, notwithstanding the illegal laws that make drug use criminal, is due solely to the artificially spiked prices of drugs, which is a consequence of relative risk that is created by dumb, ineffective and illegal laws, and because of greedy and unscrupulous organised criminal peddlers.
understand, the plants we call drugs are basically weeds and shrubs, and are grown rather cheaply – coffee being perhaps the most expensive and labour intensive of drugs. as we know, coffee and tobacco for that matter, are affordable in mass quantities. other drugs require much smaller doses, so they are very cheap to bring to market. this means the biggest issues related to drug use are artificially created by our ill-conceived drug laws.
it is high time we recognize the error of our approach on every level, and legalise. if we can survive legal alcohol, we can survive any natural, non-synthetic/refined drug use. there is no record of any society being destroyed by such drugs in their midst; however, there is much evidence of societies having been horribly affected by the intrusive drug laws imposed upon them by foreign powers.

Alberta has heavily funded AADAC Drug Rehab Centers for years to help addicts get off drugs. But those are only for people who WANT help. Users of the safe injection sites dont want help or have any desire to get off drugs. And now our society supports that. Sad….
