No injuries were reported, but investigators say at least $30,000 worth of damage was sustained, and that Lethbridge Police were being called in to assist, following a southside basement fire Thursday.

Neighbours called 911 just before noon after seeing and smelling smoke in a four-plex in the 3500 block of 20th Ave. S., say Lethbridge Fire Department investigators.

“We had crews from two different stations respond to a residential structure fire at the property behind us here,” said Adam Saturley with the LFD.

“Upon arrival, crews noticed that there was smoke coming from an area in the basement that was unoccupied at the time. Crews went in; extinguished the fire fairly quickly. Most of the damage that’s been sustained is smoke damage.”

The other units were evacuated during the LFD presence, and damage was limited to the one unit.

“We always like to err on the side of caution; make sure everyone is safe, everyone is out of the building. We were able to do that,” Saturley said.

The police response was to “cover all of our bases,” he said of the Priority Crimes Unit being called in.

“We are going to continue to investigate,” Saturley said. “We’ll be working with Lethbridge Police at this point. We like to work together on these things until we make a determination as to what happened.”
