The Waterton Golf Course is celebrating its 95th anniversary this year with special celebrations.
The official birthday was June 15.
Marty Peterson, manager and director of golf for the course, says it will also be the 60-year anniversary for the Waterton Oilmen Golf Tournament, which is going to be held Aug. 26-27. It is the 70-year anniversary for the Waterton Open, which will be held Aug. 12-13.
“Over the 95 years, we have had groups that have come to play year after year, to a course that was designed by Stanley Thompson with the amazing backdrop of the majestic Rockies,” said Peterson.
Peterson says they have the privilege of having this course in a beautiful park that is not commercialized as are some other courses.
“We have some members that have been here for the last 60 years. We also have groups that have made this course an annual golfing retreat,” he adds.
The layout of the golf course has remained the same since the 1940s. Peterson says in the 1970s, an underground irrigation system was installed drawing water from Blakiston Creek.
In 2010, the system was upgraded with a storage pond on the golf course using effluent water from the Waterton townsite.
“The greens are average in size and appear to flat. However, there are subtle ridges and undulations that makes reading the putt a challenge,” adds Peterson.
The Waterton Open scoring record is 65-74-65 by Matt Harrison in 2013.
