The 2014-15 Miss Indian World made her first trip to Lethbridge for the International Peace Powwow and Festival on the weekend.
Taylor Christianna Thomas from Shoshone-Bannock of Idaho is Shoshone-Bannock, Kickapoo, and Prairie Band Potawatomi and has one month left as Miss World Indian.
In April, she’ll pass on her title to a new recipient during the 32nd annual Gathering of Nation Powwow in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Peace Powwow invited Thomas to attend the event, where she participated in the Grand Entry and helped judge the speech portion of Miss and Junior Miss Blackfoot Canada pageant.
Thomas said her role as Miss Indian World is to be representative for indigenous people throughout North America.
“As a cultural ambassador, I have the opportunity to travel to and from all over Indian Country. I’ve even been, of course, to non-Indian events representing our Indian people as well.”
Through her travels she’s been given the opportunity to meet many different people, and recently met President Barack Obama.
“That was a really great opportunity that Miss Indian World has presented me with, that was my chance to be a cultural ambassador for all of us — for all of Indian Country,” she said.
Thomas said she’s excited to pass the title on but will miss “travelling, meeting new people, making new friends and being a role model to younger girls — to all women.”
Overall, the weekend was a great success said Kelly Good, powwow co-ordinator, and she said she felt like they had record-breaking turnout this year.
Nearly 400 dancers and 17 drumming groups competed in the two-day powwow.
“I actually think the weather had a lot to do with it, it was an easy drive for people to come from the south, east or west. It’s just that time of year where people are itching to dance because they’ve been home sewing and beading all winter and they want to get their moccasins dusted off,” said Good.
