Lethbridge Regional Police Service has charged a 40-year-old man following a series of incidents Monday afternoon in a southside neighbourhood.
On March 16 at approximately 12:30 p.m., police received multiple calls about a man carrying a knife and acting erratically in a southside neighbourhood.
Investigation determined a man had damaged the inside of a home he had been staying at along the 4000 block of 20th Avenue South, and then attended two other homes nearby, where he confronted the occupants, then left the residences without further incident.
Police said it was reported a man also attended a third home and began threatening the lone female occupant and damaging her door. Upon police arrival, a man was located at the back door and was armed with a metal blade. The man’s behaviour was extremely erratic, according to police, as officers attempted to negotiate with him. Despite a lengthy exchange, police said the man would not obey police directions and a sock round (soft projectile) was fired, which allowed officers to take him safely into custody.
Richard William Joseph Gainford, 40, is charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, uttering threats to cause damage to property, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and two counts of mischief to property.
Gainford was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today.
