Lethbridge Regional Police Service has concluded a collision investigation without charges after an elderly man drove his vehicle into a downtown bank earlier today.
At approximately 1 p.m., a Dodge Journey, operated by an 85-year-old man was travelling east along the 400 block of 5th Street South when the driver attempted to parallel park on the north side of the TD Bank. As the vehicle was nosing into the spot, the driver applied the gas instead of the brake, and the vehicle proceeded over the curb, knocked down a parking meter and sign post, crossed eight feet of sidewalk, went over a cement barrier and collided with the TD Bank. The vehicle ultimately came to rest inside an occupied room of the bank. Neither the driver nor any occupants of the bank were injured.
Charges are not anticipated, however, LRPS will bring the matter to the attention of Alberta Transportation’s Driver Fitness and Monitoring branch.
