EDMONTON – An Alberta United Conservative legislature member who resigned abruptly is facing charges of sex assault and sexual interference with a minor.
Don MacIntyre was charged last week, but his name had been put under a publication ban that was lifted today by a judge in Red Deer, Alta.
MacIntyre was a first-time member of the legislature for the constituency of Innisfail-Sylvan Lake in central Alberta.
He was elected as a member of the Wildrose opposition, which merged with the Progressive Conservatives last summer to become the new United Conservative Party.
MacIntyre left caucus last Friday and resigned his seat on Monday.
United Conservative Leader Jason Kenney says in a statement the party was unaware of the charges until MacIntyre said something last Friday.
“I was shocked and disgusted to learn of the serious criminal charges filed against former MLA Don MacIntyre,” Kenney said in a statement Friday. “There are few crimes more vile than sexual crimes against children.”
