ARCHER, Clifford Ernest
1935-2014
Clifford Archer passed away at the Lacombe Nursing Home on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the age of 78
years. Born in Taber, AB on December 1, 1935, our beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Uncle is
survived by his son James Archer(Melody) and Carolyn Strand of Calgary, AB, daughter Debbie Salmon(Brent)
and being most proud of his grandchildren Tyler and Jenna Salmon all from Lacombe, AB. He will be
lovingly remembered by brothers, Phil Archer(Karen) of Red Deer, AB; Don Archer(Louanne) of Killam, AB;
Rob Archer(Chris) of Taber, AB; sister-in-law Myrna Archer of Innisfail, AB, in-laws Douglas and Leslie
Brown, and Bunty and Peter Clark all of Glasgow, Scotland as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and
great nieces and nephews. Cliff was predeceased by his wife Betsy Archer in 2011, parents Esther and
James Archer, brothers Ray and Grant Archer, and nephews Kevin and Dan Archer.
Cliff was a genuine man who had dedicated himself to his work and family. He enjoyed life, fishing,
golfing, softball, hockey and camping, and a highlight was attending a family reunion. He had a big
heart, was selfless and could strike up a conversation with anyone, and would meet a new friend
everywhere he went. He was most rewarded with time spent with family and friends. He will forever be
remembered as an honest, fun-loving man.
A Funeral Service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 5226-51 Avenue, Lacombe, AB, on Friday,
January 31, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. A private family interment service will follow at the Lacombe Fairview
Cemetery.

COX
MONTE DUANE COX, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the age of
82 years.
Monte was born in Raymond July 6, 1931. The family resided in Welling. Monte’s passion in life started at
the age of 14. He then went back to work at the Stringham Ranch and various other leases riding and
braking horses in Southern Alberta. He earned extra money breaking horses for the neighbours. His horse
career earned him titles in saddle bronc, calf roping, Appaloosa International Show and team roping.
Monte was the president of the SARRC from 65-76, Fort Whoop Up Club in 57, Fort Macleod Club in 58,
Claresholm Club 79-89 and a director of the Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada from 60-63. He founded the
Innisfail Roping Club in 63 and Edmonton Roping Club in 72. Monte loved to ride in the mountains and
spent many days riding in the gap and hunting in the flat.
Monte and his brother Blaine were in partnership and operated Chinook Propane in Pincher Creek for 5
years. He then went on to be a Provincial Gas Inspector for 25 years. Monte was also an Elder in the LDS
Church.
In 1951 Monte married Noreen Gillies, together they had 3 daughters Pam (Allan) Woods, Dana (Jim)
Glanville and Kim Klassen. In 1981 Monte married Mary Patricia Allan-Cox and raised her daughter Carrie,
who also took on this western culture and is married to horse trainer Brent Trout.
Monte is survived by his daughters Pam (Allan) Woods, Dana (Jim) Glanville, Kim Klassen, Carrie (Brent)
Trout; grandchildren Shea, Jimmi Lou, Irvine, Boggust, Cori Jo, Amy, Chancey, Autumn, Thomas; 8 great
grandchildren; brothers Sheldon (Pat) Cox, Don (Hannah-deceased) Cox, Lee Cox; sisters Kathryn (Les)
Delparte, Sharon Cox, Karen (Jim) Bagshaw, Gayle (Bill) Toth; sisters-in-law Connie Cox and Marlene Cox.
Besides his late wife Mary, Monte was predeceased by his mother Zella, stepmother Genneal and father
LeMond Cox, brothers Gary Cox, Blaine Cox, sister Marie Clark and grandson Clay Klassen.
Friends may meet the family from 12:00 P.M. to 12:45 P.M. prior to the Funeral Service on Saturday,
February 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, WELLING CHAPEL, with
Brother Darren Wilde, officiating. Interment to follow in the Temple Hill Cemetery.

Leah passed away peacefully at the St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre on Thursday, January 2nd, 2014 at
the age of 53 years with Glen by her side.
Left to mourn her passing are her beloved spouse Glen Thompson of Iron Springs, Alberta: his family, Son
Greg (Debbie) and grandchildren Katherine, Andrew and Cody Thompson; Dad Merlin Thompson (Marg Hunt);

LEAVITT
KEITH W. LEAVITT passed away peacefully in Cardston on Tuesday, January 28th, 2014. Keith was born August
18th, 1919 in Lethbridge, Alberta.
He is survived by his loving wife Shirley; his children Doreen (Don) Lehman and David (Sherri) Leavitt;
stepchildren and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Keith also had 10 brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews.
Keith will always be remembered by his friendly, outgoing nature and his love of horses. He will be
dearly missed by his numerous friends and family.

LEO WINGERTER
1932 ~ 2014
Mr. Leo Wingerter of Lethbridge, formerly of Claresholm, went to be with his Savior on Saturday, January
25, 2014 at the age of 81 years.
Leo was born in Bracken, Saskatchewan on April 26, 1932. He reached grade 10 in high school but had to
leave school to help with the farming. He continued on to receive his carpentry certificate from SAIT in
1958. Leo was married to Dolores (nee Sincennes) on August 15, 1956; they were married for 57 years.
Leo worked as a carpenter for various builders for over 20 years. He formed his own company, Kalypso
Homes in 1976 and specialized in custom built homes. He applied for a position with the Care Center in
Claresholm in 1979 and moved with Dolores where they lived for the next 32 years. He retired in 1993 but
kept busy by doing odd carpentry jobs around town and was a locksmith. Leo was always active in the
church belonging to the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed calling bingo or making pancakes and sausage and
was known for his delicious chicken soup. He was also actively involved in and a member of the Claresholm
Golf Club and the curling club.
Leo is survived by his wife, the love of his life, his rock, Dolores; his children Les (Val), Doris
(Mike), Linda (Tony) and Gerald (Pauline); his grandchildren Christie (Roman), Sharla (Sean), David, Ryan
(Aileen), Dan, Joe (Deanndra), Shaun (Ali) and Lenee (David); and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also
survived by his 2 brothers and 3 sisters Mike (Josephine), Joe, Celine, Margaret (Carl) and Mary; as well
as other family and friends.
Leo was predeceased by his mother and father, Anne and Valentine Wingerter; his brothers-in-law Albert
Preboy and Leonard Schmidt and sister-in-law Rosemary Wingerter.

MACDONALD
Malcolm “Mac” Duncan MacDonald, of Lethbridge, AB passed away at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit on
January 24, 2014 at the age of 86 years, following a lengthy and hard fought battle with cancer.
Mac is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jane MacDonald; his three children Susan McIntosh (Tom)
of Coaldale, Sandra MacDonald (Filip Krotki) of Calgary, Bruce MacDonald of Lethbridge; four
grandchildren Andrew MacDonald, Devon MacDonald, Mark McIntosh, Keith McIntosh; great-grandson Matyx
MacDonald; siblings Norris MacDonald (Evelyn), Angus MacDonald (Audrey), Nelson MacDonald (Aileen), MJ
Samuelson (Ken) and Kathy MacDonald; brother-in-law Bill Owens. He was predeceased by his son Brian
MacDonald, older sister Florence Owens, parents Margaret and Neil MacDonald.
Mac, the third child of Neil and Margaret MacDonald, was born in Kimberley, BC on May 23, 1927 but spent
most of his childhood in Calgary, AB. Mac attended the University of Alberta where he received a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Agriculture. It was during this time while working at a summer job in BC that he met
Jane Elizabeth Moore. They were married in Victoria, BC on November 4, 1949.
Upon graduating, Mac began his career as a research scientist for the Canadian Government. He took a
leave to pursue a doctorate in Genetics in Agriculture at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Mac returned
o his career at the Agriculture Canada Research Centre in Lethbridge in 1956 where he worked in crop
science, primarily with wheat and corn. He successfully developed new varieties of corn capable of
reaching maturity in Alberta’s shorter growing season. Mac retired in 1988, after 38 years of service,
but continued his work with corn for a number of years later.
Mac participated in sports of all types – football (coach and referee), curling, tennis, badminton,
hockey and golf. He organized and participated in countless bonspiels and also earned his private pilot
license and flew both airplanes and gliders. Mac was also keenly interested in entomology.
Above all, Mac was a loving and generous man who was always willing to help out. He was a humble man who
never complained and loved a good laugh.
We lost a great one.
A Celebration of Mac’s life will be held from 5:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M., with a Ceremony beginning at 6:00
P.M., on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the VIEWING GALLERY, GALT MUSEUM, 502-1st St. S., Lethbridge, AB.

SCHLOTZER
It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to ANNIE SCHLOTZER, beloved wife of the late Michael
Schlotzer. Our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years
surrounded by her family on Sunday, January 26th 2013 at St. Therese Villa.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Erika (Pete) Bosters and Annemarie (Ed) Thiessen, her
grandchildren Kristopher (Leanna) Bosters, Daniel (Heather) Bosters, James and Evan Thiessen and two
great grandsons Joshua and Zachary Bosters.
She is also survived by her niece and nephews, Johann (Rosi) Kremenik, Elizabeth (Peter) Kiefer, George
Stimatz, Frank Freihaut and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband Michael, her parents Anton and Katharina Magosch, her sisters Eva
Kremenik and Katharina Schunk , her niece Kathy Freihaut and stillborn twin granddaughters.
Annie was born on July 11, 1924 in Croatia, the youngest of three daughters. In 1944 her family moved to
Austria where she married Michael Schlotzer in 1950 and in May of 1953 they immigrated to Canada.
Mom was a very gifted seamstress and worked at St. Michael’s hospital for many years sewing for the
Sisters of St. Martha and the student nursing program. She also used her talents sewing draperies at
Gast’s/Designer’s Furniture Gallery. She also spent many hours sewing treasured clothing and in her
retirement quilted and crocheted beautiful projects for her family.
Gardening was one of her passions and the treasures of her harvest found their way into her cooking and
our fridges. This love of cooking and baking led to the sharing of secret family recipes that have stood
the tests of time. She also loved giving one-on-one cooking and baking lessons to the four hungry
grandsons who were the greatest joy of her life.
Mom was a woman of great faith and enjoyed singing in the St. Basil’s Church choir. She took pride in
being a lifetime member of the Catholic Women’s League.

SHASKIN
HELEN SHASKIN, beloved wife of departed Stephen Shaskin, passed away in her home in Vancouver, BC, on
Tuesday, January 21, 2014, after a brief illness and with family at her side.
Helen was born on February 7, 1937 in Elenovka, Ukraine. Her parents Juhym and Ahaphia Ponomar, and her
five siblings, became refugees in 1944 and immigrated to Magrath, Alberta, in 1949. She was an award-
winning student and graduated from high school in 1956. Shortly after, she married Stephen Shaskin and
they raised their four children in Lethbridge, enjoying 45 years of marriage. For the past 10 years Helen
resided in Vancouver surrounded by loving family.
Helen will be remembered for her love of family and friends, and her gracious kindness and optimism in
the face of life’s challenges. She always had many friends and her Vancouver years were filled with the
joy of an active social life at church and at the Kerrisdale Community Centre with acting, dancing,
painting and creative writing. A trip to Paris, France, with her daughters was among her highlights of
the recent past years.
She will be deeply missed by her children; Rana, Chris, Diane and Gina, and her grandchildren; Rachel and
Nicholas Shaskin, and Alexandre Craft. She also leaves behind her sisters Sasha Mirkovich and Mary
Sereda.

STEVE SZABO, passed away at the Raymond Health Centre, on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the age of 87
years.
Steve is survived by his children Debra Werk and Kelly Szabo of Lethbridge; grandchildren Michele
(Sheldon) Regner of Stirling, Jeff (Cheena) Werk and their children Zane and Matilda of Merville, BC;
grandchildren Daniel Orcutt and Amber Herdman and her children Nevaeh, Jersey and Derrick; nephew Jack
Ott. Steve was predeceased by his parent Ann and Steve, sister Margaret and daughter Janice Firth.
Steve thoroughly enjoyed his work. He was a talented welder, millwright and machinist. When he was not
busy at work, Steve loved to fish. Duck Lake held a special place for him and his family with many
gatherings that took place there.

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Joyce
Jacqueline Yellow Horn of Fort Macleod, AB. Joyce passed away suddenly on January 26, 2014 at the age of
68.
Joyce was born in Brocket, AB on May 4, 1945 to Alfred and Cecile Crow Shoe. She spent the majority of
her life in Fort Macleod where she raised her family. Joyce was known to be a very compassionate, caring,
generous and kind person. Although, Joyce endured many struggles in her life she always seemed to have a
positive outlook and touched the hearts of many people.
Left to mourn her passing are her children: Roland Yellow Horn, Stanley Yellow Horn, Roberta (Mark)
Smallbones, Julien (Deidrie) Yellow Horn, Sandra (Dale) Johnson, 20 grandchildren and 4 great-
grandchildren. She is also survived by three siblings, Regina (Lyle) Brazeau, Alvina Crow Shoe and Alan
Simone.

Oscar Herringer, beloved husband of Edna Herringer, went home to his Lord and Savior on Monday, January
27, 2014 at the age of 92 years. He passed away quietly at his home. Oscar was a man of integrity and
deep faith who loved life.
The Funeral Service for Oscar will be held at the RockPointe Church Bowridge Site, 12 Bowridge Drive
N.W., Calgary on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 1:30 P.M. A family graveside service will be held at the
Taber Memorial Garden on Saturday, February 1, 2014. A time for remembering Oscar will follow.

Oscar will be deeply missed by his wife Edna; his children Bryan (Susan) Herringer of Calgary and Shauna
(Ron) Kinniburgh of Calgary, along with six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; three brothers
Wilf of Calgary, Sid (Margaret) of Langley, British Columbia, Clarence (Ruth) of Medicine Hat and by
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother and five sisters.
Oscar was born November 23, 1921 in Medicine Hat to John and Caroline Heringer. He worked a number of
jobs in the Medicine Hat area as well as spending time in the Canadian Army prior to joining Safeway in
Medicine Hat as a Meat Cutter. Oscar was subsequently transferred to Taber as Safeway¹s Meat Manager
where he spent the majority of his working career before retiring.  After retiring from Safeway, Oscar
drove school bus for the Taber School Division for nine years, a job he absolutely enjoyed. Oscar and
Edna were married in Medicine Hat on October 18, 1947. They had been married for sixty six years at the
time of his death.
