GILBERT CROW CHIEF (Iitsinohkinnii)
Gros Ventre Necklace
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our dear dad GILBERT on October 28, 2014 at the age of 79 years. Dad passed away at home surrounded by his family. Dad was born January 15, 1935. Dad will be sadly missed by his loving wife Barbara who stood by him and took loving care of him. In celebration of Dad¹s life, his legacy and memory will live on through his children Arlene, Tobi (Rusty), Verda (Marcel), Debby (Albert), Noreen and Lana; his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Dad was so grateful to be able to celebrate 5 generations. Dad loved his family so much – he helped raise 3 of his grandchildren -Keisha, Kelly, and Treyson. Dad also leaves to mourn his loving brother Charlie (Betty) Crow Chief; his special nephew and niece who he also took as his brother and sister, Randy (Anita) Bottle and Penny (Mike) Dan; spiritual brother the late Roy (Pauline) Tallow. Family meant so much to Dad – he adopted sons and daughters to join his loving family – Arnold (Bianca) Mountain Horse, Andrew (Wanda) Day Chief, Kenny (Sherri) Eagle Plume, Arnold (Joan) Wells, Rex (Mary) Bird, Calvin (Yvonne) Crow, Robin Cat Face, Annette Russell and Gavina King. Dad was predeceased by his father and mother, Joe & Cecile Crow Chief; his sons James and Kelly; his siblings Leo, Wallace (Mary), Isaac (Elizabeth), Lewis (Rosaline), Mae (Ralph), Gail Crow Chief; his grandchildren Shayla Wings, Tara Bull Shields, Cherie Iron Shirt, Mark & Irvin Bull Shields/Yellow Feet and Shay Ann Jewel. Despite losing his mother at such a young age, Dad gained 3 beautiful loving and compassionate mothers – Atan (Margaret) Hind Man, Aahkiaapikkitstaakii (Annie) Mountain Horse, and Aapoyiaakii (Annie) Wadsworth. These 3 beautiful, knowledgeable, and wise women were always asking how Dad was, and wanted to make sure Dad was okay. Dad made sure he had contact with his mothers. Dad had to sit through long lectures from them and finally they would make sure he did not leave without enjoying a meal. Dad¹s traditional teachings led him to join our Sacred Horn Society (The Black Horse Society). Dad was so proud to join our sacred society with his daughter Verda and son-in-law Marcel Weasel Head which he would boast about to everyone. He was also proud of daughter Debby and son-in-law Albert Black Water who also followed our sacred teachings. Dad loved his six daughters, especially Verda who was ³Daddy²s girl². Verda was named after Dad. Dad¹s teachings to his children and grandchildren were ³Minaitohtsikit (never mind). Should anyone do you wrong ³Pray for them no matter what². Dad believed in the power of prayers and believed everything happens for a reason. Dad¹s beliefs were so humble which left a mark on everyone – especially to his community of Moses Lake who loved and cared for Dad. He was given so many nick names, ie Mayor of Moses Lake, Gilligan, Sister Houle, Moses and Bobby Doll. One of the highlights of his life was his boxing career in which he achieved success in the professional boxing era. He was well known for his ³Knock Outs² and his many titles; also his army career which he shared stories to his children and grandchildren. One of the stories he told was when he first laid eyes on ³Mom², he knew she was the one and decided not to go overseas. We always told Dad, ³Wow, what a love story² that was. Dad loved life, he always made sure family came first. This teaching he instilled to his family. Dad¹s creativeness led him to win three consecutive years in the best Christmas decorating contest in Moses Lake. One would see Dad at the kitchen table planning and drawing his blue print. Dad also took pride in maintaining his yard and lawn. He was also well known for competing in pow-wows and drumming contests. This is Dad¹s triumph and success in life that he shared with his wife of 55 years. And we were blessed to have such a loving, caring, and compassionate father. We will miss Dad so much but we will cherish our memories forever. We love you Dad, from your loving family and loving wife Barbara. The Family Service will be held at Legacy Funeral Home, Cardston on Sunday, November 2nd from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A Wake Service will be held at St. Paul¹s Anglican Church, Blood Reserve on Sunday, November 2nd from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul¹s Anglican Church on Monday, November 3rd at 1:00 p.m. Interment in St. Paul¹s Cemetery, Blood Reserve.
