Mrs. Cynthia Rose Squarek (nee Bond), beloved wife of John Edward Squarek, passed away in the St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit in Lethbridge on May 9, 2015, after a courageous, hard fought, 9 year battle with lung cancer.
Cynthia was born in Coleman, Alberta, on December 25th, 1942, and was married to John on August 23, 1963. Cynthia and John have been married 51 years. Together they had three children, Kimberly-Ann Frances in February, 1967, John Britt in January, 1969 and Jennifer Lynn in August, 1970.
Cynthia lived a life full of love and adventure, starting out at the University of Calgary studying to be a music/math teacher and living with her sister in a basement suite. Home for the summer, she met John and a year later they were married and living in Norman, Oklahoma while John obtained his degree in Petroleum Engineering. The next few years were spent in Didsbury, Olds, and Calgary until they moved to Houston, TX in 1974. This was followed by stints in Lagos, Nigeria and London England, before returning “home” to Calgary in 1976 when Cynthia upgraded her education to a Bachelor of Education to resume her teaching career.
In 1980 Cynthia and her family moved to Adelaide, Australia, where she had an illustrious career as a music teacher at Scotch College. In 1993, Cynthia and John decided to return to Calgary where she continued her career as a music teacher and was loved by all her students. She taught music at Calgary Christian School and University Elementary School prior to her retirement in June, 2006. In August, 2006 she was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent the first of a series of treatments.
During that time, she has seen the addition of 4 grandchildren to her already great tally of 8, travelled to Disneyland, Palm Springs, the Grand Canyon, took a Mediterranean Cruise, and spent as much time as possible camping at Dutch Creek; her favorite place.
Left to mourn her loss is her husband, John, and her loving family, Kimberly and Michael Edmonds (daughter and son-in-law) of Calgary, Alberta, Britt & BJ Squarek (son and daughter-in-law) of Raymond Alberta, and Jennifer & Michael McKinders (daughter and son-in-law) of Calgary, Alberta, along with her 12 grandchildren: Taylor (22), John (21), Alyshia (19), Montana (17), Kyle (16), Clark (16), Breanna (12), Jessica (10), Joshua (7) Dustin (3), and Brooklyn and Jace (2), as well as 2 step-grandchildren, Dakota and Slade, and her sister Beverly and her husband Len Ross of Taber Alberta, and 3 nieces and nephews.
