By Lethbridge Herald Obituaries on August 31, 2015.

Mary Chuen

MARY CHUEN, formerly of Bow Island and Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa in Lethbridge on August 23, 2015. Mary is survived by her brother Norman Chuen and sisters Hazel Fong and her children: Linda Fong (Binx) Selby and daughter, James (Linda) Fong and children, David (Anwen) and children, Shari (Dennis) Boisvert and children, Chris (Janelle) Fong and children; Violet Fong and her children: Larry (Angela) and children, Gary (Denise) Fong and children, Donald (Deb) Fong and children, Randy Fong and children, Daryl Fong, Rodney Fong and Valerie Fong.

Mary was predeceased by her parents Sun and Bow Sim Chuen; sisters, Irene and Helen; brothers, Harry and George; and brothers-in-law John Fong and Lorne Fong.

Mary was born and raised in Bow Island, AB where she lived for the majority of her life before moving to Medicine Hat and eventually Lethbridge. Mary spent her entire working career in the family grocery store which she managed with her brothers George and Harry. Mary’s ready smile and belief that only the best was good enough made her a favourite amongst the store’s customers. Former customers of the store always speak fondly of Mary and how her kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. It was not uncommon to have your grocery order arrive with a little something extra and a package of cookies or a few chocolate bars for the kids; no one needed to ask where it came from, everyone knew it was Mary’s way of saying “Hello” and “Thank-you”. Mary loved children and dogs and saved her biggest smiles for them; even later in life she always made sure she had a chocolate bar or doggy treat ready at hand for her favourite visitors. Mary’s life was not without adversity and she encountered many challenges to her health, especially in her later years. She overcame each challenge with stubborn determination and dealt with the consequences with a quiet pride. Mary spent her last years as a residence of St. Therese Villa in Lethbridge and her family wishes to thank everyone for the kind care they provided, especially over the last month.

Family and friends are invited to pay their final respects from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 St. S., Lethbridge, AB.

Edwin Kiffiak

1942 – 2015

Edwin Harry Kiffiak of Foremost, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away suddenly alongside his loving wife, Gale Woodward, on Monday, August 24, 2015.

Edwin was born in Coaldale on September 3, 1942. He grew up on the family farm near Legend, where he developed a love of nature and a connection to the prairie land. After he graduated from Foremost High School, he attended and graduated from the SAIT where he studied land surveying. He took his newly learned skills to the Yukon, where he had many adventures while surveying remote northern locations. Always up for a new experience, he took a trip with several friends in the late 1960s where he drove a VW van from Canada to the tip of South America and back. It was on this trip, on a beach in Guatemala, where he met Karen, the woman who would later become his wife of 40 years. After their marriage, they moved to the Kiffiak homestead to begin farming full time. It was here that he raised his family and established Foremost Seeds Ltd. He was a loyal and deeply loving husband and father. He was a very gentle and sensitive man, concerned for the needs and burdens of others, and had a particular gift in reaching out to those who were hurting or lonely. His faith in God was central in every aspect of his life and his love for his LORD and saviour, Jesus Christ, was the well from which sprang his generous spirit, forgiving soul, and his love for his family and community. It was after the death of his wife, Karen, that Edwin met another beautiful lady named Gale Woodward. After a short courtship, they were married in January 2015, and their love for one another, and joy at having found it, was evident to all who knew them. Gale brought the light back into his eyes and their brief time together was permeated with peace, caring, love, laughter, and adventure.

Edwin is survived by his daughter Carolyn Anderson (Tim), son Nathan Kiffiak, grandson Jack Anderson, brothers Dennis Kiffiak (Beatriz), Oral Kiffiak (Joanne), sister Erna Topliffe, mother-in-law Naomi Faye Bowser, sisters-in-law Carol McMains (Bob), Janice Bowen, Lynne Mangels (Dave) as well as numerous loving nephews and nieces, and many recently added members from Gale’s family.

Edwin is predeceased by his father Harry Kiffiak, his mother Margaret Kiffiak, father-in-law John T Bowser, daughter Rachelle Lynne Kiffiak, and wife Karen Kay Kiffiak.
