Konstantin Acehaida

1927 – 2015

Konstantin Acehaida passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the age of 88 years.

He leaves his loving wife Anna; his daughters Elizabeth (Bill) Slack and Teresa (Lonnie) Baceda; grandchildren Jade (Shane) Krupinski, Joanna Russell, and Chris Slack; 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, grandson-in-law Cam Russell, as well as sister-in-law, Nadia Krywonis.

Konstantin was born on April 10, 1927 in the village of Kostopol, Ukraine. Kon and Anna immigrated to Canada in 1948 arriving in Lethbridge where Kon began work on a local farm hoeing sugar beets. His hard work and determination resulted in a rewarding and successful farming career in Skiff spanning 55 years. He was a man of integrity, generous and kind, who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Forstell for his care over the last few years and the palliative team and staff at St. Michael’s for their compassionate care and respectful attention to Kon during his last days. You have all been a comfort to us during this very difficult time.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00am, on Friday, November 20, 2015 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street S. Lethbridge. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

BEANE

SHIRLEY YVONNE BEANE (nee HELMER), beloved wife of the late Oren Beane, passed away peacefully after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her children Karen Bader (Tom Sanders) of Lethbridge, Randy Horne (Sue Tegart) of Carbon, Jack Horne of Lethbridge, Darren Horne of Venezuela, stepchildren; Jeff (Cathy) Beane, Tim (Heather) Beane, both of Wainwright, Rory Beane of Calgary, Michael Bean and Kelly Harris as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Also left to cherish her memory are brothers Ron Helmer of Lethbridge, Art (Lois) Gast of Ladysmith B.C. and sisters Rose Helmer and Joanne (John) Schoorl of Lethbridge.

She was predeceased by her husband Oren, just in March of this year.

Shirley was born on January 17, 1936 in Edmonton, AB., to Fred Helmer and Emma Miller. She loved her crafts. She crocheted everything from doll clothes, baby outfits, dish cloths and afghans. She entered craft fairs in Lloydminster and Lethbridge, winning Grand Aggregate one year. She did cross stitching, plastic canvas work and wood burning. She made her own greeting cards for every occasion.

A Visitation will be held prior to the Funeral Service at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M.

A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB. On Saturday, November 21st, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Eva Stanley officiating.

A Graveside Service will follow the Funeral Service at Mountain View Cemetery, refreshments and fellowship will follow the Graveside Service at Cornerstone Funeral Home.

Dirk de Graaf
1953 – 2015
It is with heavy hearts that Dirk de Graaf’s family announces his
sudden passing at his home in Vauxhall on Tuesday, November 10, 2015.
Dirk was the beloved companion to Phyllis Hirney for many years, and
will be missed by her son Kelly, daughter Tammy and Phyllis’s
grandchildren. He was the beloved son of Pieter and the late Teresa de
Graaf. Dirk will be lovingly remembered by his brothers Sid, John and
Ivan; his sisters Hennie, Jetty, Janet, Pearl and numerous nephews,
nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Dirk was predeceased by his four grandparents, recently by his mother
Teresa de Graaf of Lethbridge, his missing sister Donna Cupido in 2004,
as well as numerous uncles, aunts and a cousin Sid Vander Ploeg of
Vauxhall.
Dirk was raised along with his eight siblings in Vauxhall. Growing up
he enjoyed playing hockey, baseball, and basketball. He served in the
Canadian Armed Forces for seven years as a Medical Assistant and was
also trained for Aeromedical Evacuation. Dirk later returned to
Vauxhall, working at Miller Excavating for a time and more recently was
successfully self-employed in the Oil & Gas Industry for the last
fifteen years. He thoroughly enjoyed small town life and became an
active member of the Vauxhall Royal Canadian Legion, serving faithfully
on the Executive Committee for many years.
In his spare time Dirk was an avid reader, loved travelling with
Phyllis to warm destinations, and recently golfed one hundred and twenty
eight rounds with friends at various courses.
A celebration of Dirk’s life will take place at the Vauxhall Legion,
217 – 5 Street North, Vauxhall on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 2:00
P.M. with Pastor Ken Easterbrook officiating. A private family burial
will be held prior to the service. Condolences may be forwarded by

JOHNSTON

ALAN JOHN JOHNSTON, beloved husband of Katie Johnston, passed away in Lethbridge on Friday, November 13, 2015 at the age of 72 years.

Alan was born on October 1, 1943 in Kent, England, the only child of Alan Edward Johnston and Valerie (Newland) Bullen.

Alan is survived by the love of his life Katie, his Mother Val Bullen, his children Samuel Johnston, Rachel (Timothy) Frantz, Rebecca (Mitchell) Casson, Sarah (Jonathan) Sangster; his Grandchildren Lauren and Taylor Johnston, Griffin Casson, London and Mason Sangster; Luke (Jill), Melissa (Vasil), Tyson, Lee, Ryan, Aidan and Angelica Frantz. He is also survived by one niece Esther Kristina and her family, as well as his half brother Bruce Johnston, and half sister Marlene Cambridge.

Alan is predeceased by his father and his youngest daughter Michaela Kay Johnston.

Al grew up in West Wickam, Kent, England, during World War 2. He attended Malvern College, a prestigious boarding school, where he received Top Prize in England for Chemistry, and served as a member of the Air Cadets. He went on to Liverpool University studying Biological Sciences when Katie his eternal partner came into his life. After marrying, he started work at the Swiss Bank in the fraud department all because of his love for numbers. Alan later moved to the USA with his wife and young children to attend BYU and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He then Immigrated to Canada in 1975 to start a new life with his family in this area where his father and grandfather were raised.

Alan and his wife were asked by the Government to start a Community Health Service Agency, where he spent the remainder of his career serving people of his community. He had a Great Love of People and cared deeply for the well being of others.

Alan was a Great Teacher, Leader, Son, Husband, Father and Grandfather; Cherished Patriarch of our Family. He was a Noble and True Gentleman; Faithful and Committed to all that is Right and Truthful.

Friends may meet with the Family at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703-13 Street North, Lethbridge on Friday November 20, 2015 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm and at the church November 21, 2015 from 10:00am to 10:45am.

Funeral Services will be held at the WESTSIDE STAKE CENTER, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 560 Highlands Blvd West on Saturday November 21, 2015 at 11:00am. Interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Jose Afrodicio Solano Minero

1927 – 2015

Jose Afrodicio Solano Minero of San Juan Nonualco and beloved adopted city of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on November 12, 2015 at the age of 87.

Jose was born on December 1, 1927 in San Juan Nonualco, El Salvador. He had various careers including serving as a Chief of the National Police Department and as a politician, including Mayor of San Juan Nonualco and as an Advisor of the Minister of Agriculture. Due to Civil War in El Salvador, he moved to Mexico, then to Canada on February 17, 1983 with his spouse Mirna Mena and their son Geovanny. He came to love Canada and accepted Lethbridge as his second home, where his last three children were born. In Canada, he devoted his life to Christ, going to church, raising his children and watching his family grow. His proudest moments were watching his children further and complete their post- secondary education.

He is survived by his daughter Jessie Solano; 4 sons Geovanny Solano-Mena, Roberto Solano (Ashley), Carlos Mena, and Jorge Mena (Betty); grandchildren Kaedyn, Mateo, and Cruz Solano (Roberto’s children), Melissa and Samantha Mena (Jorge’s children); Mirna Mena (Mother of his children), his extended family, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

He was predeceased by his parents Manuel Solano and Cleotilde Minero, and brothers and sisters, Zeneida, Olinda, Manuel, Alvarino and Saul Solano.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm, on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4th Street South, Lethbridge, with Marsha Graveland officiating. Inurnment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Jerry Pokarney

1937 – 2015

Jerry Pokarney of Lethbridge, Alberta, beloved father of Christy, Cheri, Brynna, and Teague, passed away suddenly on November 13, 2015 at the age of 78 years.

Jerry was born in Great Falls, Montana on June 20, 1937. Jerry spent his childhood in Great Falls and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1955. Jerry went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Music from the College of Great Falls in 1964 and proceeded to obtain his Master of Music from the University of Montana in 1967. He married his first wife, Diane Pokarney, in 1961 and together they had two daughters, Christy and Cheri. Jerry began his career as a high school band director in Hobson and Malta, Montana, before moving to Lethbridge in 1969. Jerry briefly taught at Gilbert Paterson Junior High School before taking the position as director of bands at the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, where he taught for over 30 years. He married his second wife, Bonnie Jean Brown, in 1984 and together they had two children, Brynna and Teague. Teaching music was more than just a career for Jerry, it was his passion. In addition to being an inspirational teacher, Jerry was also a composer, an author, a board member of the Alberta Band Association, a conductor, an adjudicator, and a clinician. His greatest love and talent was playing trumpet, which enabled him to perform with some of the finest musicians in North America. His retirement from teaching in 2003 allowed Jerry to devote more of his time to composing music and spending time with dear friends and family.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Gladys and George Pokarney and his brother, George “Bud” Pokarney.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Southminster United Church, 1011 4th Avenue South Lethbridge, AB, with the Reverend Canon James Robinson officiating. Interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Schmidt, Ruben

August 6, 1930 –

November 15, 2015

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruben Schmidt on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the age of 85, at Calgary, Alberta. Ruben will be lovingly remembered by his wife Lorraine, his children Arlen (Joyce), Merlin, Melden (Stacey), Colleen (Jeff), and Charleen; and his grandchildren Jacob, Adrienne, Adam, Daniel, Nicola, Branden, and Nicholas. Ruben also leaves behind his brothers Norman (Rose) and Herman (Helen), as well as other extended family members, brother and sister in laws, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Ruben was predeceased by his parents, August and Nadina, his sister Ruth, his brother Hilbert, and grandson Nathan. Ruben was a kind, selfless man who always had time for friends and family. He farmed outside of Lethbridge, Alberta for many years before he and Lorraine decided to retire in Calgary, Alberta. Although retired from farming, Ruben still kept himself busy; he was very involved with his church and church community, volunteering anywhere he could. A memorial service will be held at Centre Street Church Main Campus, 3900 2nd Street N.E. Calgary, on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Centre Street Church, a place close to Ruben’s heart.
