The newest additions to the Lethbridge Hurricanes didn’t take long to make their mark.
The Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-4 during Western Hockey League action Wednesday night in Edmonton.
And the Canes trade deadline acquisitions wasted little time jumping onto the scoresheet as Zak Zborosky scored 1:06 into the game on his first shot and first shift with his new team before fellow new face Alec Baer scored a pair of unanswered goals in the second to give Lethbridge a 6-3 after two periods.
With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 23-15-3-2 and continue to chase the Medicine Hat Tigers – who lost 4-3 the Prince George Cougars Wednesday night – for top spot in the Central Division. With the win Wednesday, the Canes how trail the Tigers by eight points.
After Zborosky handed the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead a little over a minute in, the visitors kept coming as Jordy Bellerive, Egor Babenko and Tyler Wong – with his 29th of the season – paced Lethbridge to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
But it took less than one minute for the Oil King to make it a game early in the second as Ty Gerla scored twice in eight seconds and Will Warm made it 4-3 27 seconds later.
But the Hurricanes went to the man advantage shortly afterwards and Baer scored his first as a Hurricane to make it 5-3 and then upped that lead to 6-3 with 7:46 left in the second period with his fifth goal of the year.
Lethbridge increased their lead to 7-3 36 seconds into the third on Bellerive’s second of the game and 19th of the year.
Conner McDonald rounded out the scoring with his second of the season 6:28 into the third to make it 7-4.
Hurricanes goaltender Stuart Skinner made 39 saves in the win.
The Hurricanes are back home this weekend for two games in two nights.
The Cougars are in town Friday at 7 p.m. before the Oil Kings return for a rematch Saturday night, also at 7 p.m.
