Hockey players dominated The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 8.
Male athlete of the week honours went to Mitch Maxwell from the men’s hockey team.
The fifth-year captain kicked off his final season as a Pronghorns in style last weekend, scoring a goal in both games to lead the Pronghorns to a season-opening split with the Calgary Dinos.
On Friday in Calgary, Maxwell scored the lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the Dinos. On Saturday, the Magrath product scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Pronghorns a hard fought 2-1 win.
Maxwell is tied for second in Canada West goal scoring with six other players and is tied for the team lead in points with Justin Valentino and Dallas Valentine, with two.
The Pronghorns head out on the road this weekend, travelling to Saskatoon to face the U SPORTS third-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies.
Meanwhile, Mackenzie Gal of the U of L women’s hockey team took female athlete of the week honours.
The third-year forward scored the lone goal in the Pronghorns home opener, a season-opening 1-0 win in double overtime victory over the Calgary Dinos.
Gal recorded two shots on goal and was a plus one.
In the back half of the home-and-home series, the Dinos earned the weekend split with a 1-0 win over the Pronghorns. Gal recorded one shot on goal in the loss.
Gal and Katelyn Breitkruez are tied for the team lead in points with one a piece.
Up next for the Pronghorn women is a home series with the Saskatchewan Huskies, Friday and Saturday, at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
