Cougars and Clippers crowned SAHSVL champions

The Catholic Central Cougars boys and the LCI Clippers girls have emerged with this year’s Southern Alberta High School Volleyball League championship titles.

In the boys final Saturday at LCI, the Cougars defeated the host Rams 2-1 (25-16, 20-25, 15-10) to capture the gold medal.

In the girls final in Picture Butte, LCI downed the Catholic Central Cougars 2-0 (25-21, 25-15).

On the boys side semifinals, the Cougars beat the Magrath Zeniths 2-1 (25-16, 19-25, 15-10), while LCI beat the Chinook Coyotes 2-0 (25-18, 25-14).

There was no bronze medal game in the boys’ tournament.

In the quarter-finals, the Cougars downed the Taber W.R. Myers Rebels, the Rams beat the Winston Churchill Bulldogs, Chinook got past the Immanuel Christian Eagles and the Zeniths beat the Cardston Cougars.

In the girls bronze medal game, the Chinook Coyotes blanked the Picture Butte Sugar Queens 2-0 (25-14, 25-19).

In the semifinals, the Rams beat Chinook 2-0 (25-21, 25-15) and Catholic Central defeated the Sugar Queens 2-0 (25-18, 25-21)

LCI downed Winston Churchill 2-0 in the quarter-final (25-18, 25-19).

Catholic Central swept the Magrath Pandas 2-0 (25-15, 25-16), Chinook downed Cardston 2-0 (25-15, 25-15) and Picture Butte beat W.R. Myers 2-0 (25-14, 25-14) in the other quarter-finals.

The South Zone Championships start this week.

Medicine Hat High hosts both the boys and girls 4A playdowns, while Winston Churchill hosts 3A girls.

LCI will be the site of the boys 3A zones and Lethbridge College hosts the 1A and 2A boys and girls zones.
