Hockey and basketball have taken the spotlight as the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns named its Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week Tuesday.
Taking home the male athlete of the week award is men’s goaltender Garret Hughson, while fifth-year veteran Zoe Dahl of the Horns basketball team gets the nod as the female athlete of the week.
After being named the WHL grad of the month for December, Hughson picked up where he left off as the second-year goaltender led the Pronghorns hockey team to a weekend split with the U Sports third-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend.
On Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena, Hughson stopped 37 of 40 Huskie shots, including 15 in the first period, in a 3-2 loss.
On Saturday, the product of Foremost stopped another 34 shots to backstop the Pronghorns to a key 4-2 win over the Huskies, adding an assist in the process – his third of the season.
Hughson has been in goal for all the Pronghorn wins this season and has a 3.30 goals-against average and a 0.911 save percentage.
With the split, the Pronghorns improve to 8-9-1 and are in a three-way tie with the UBC Thunderbirds and Mount Royal University Cougars for fourth place in the Canada West.
Last weekend in Winnipeg, Dahl, a fifth-year-guard, combined for 29 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the Horns two losses to the Manitoba Bisons.
Dahl, from Calgary, put up 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and one steal in the Pronghorns 87-73 loss to the Bisons Friday night.
On Saturday, she led the Pronghorns with 14 points. She also picked up one assist and two steals in an 82-59 loss.
Through 14 games, Dahl leads the Pronghorns with 12.9 points per game.
