Magrath keeps pace atop high school standings

The Magrath Pandas remained undefeated in Southern Alberta High School Girls Basketball League play Tuesday night.

The Pandas posted a 55-41 win over the Cardston Cougars in Magrath to improve to 3-0 on the season and move into a tie with the Raymond Comets for first place.

The Comets beat the Chinook Coyotes 101-53 Tuesday night to also improve to 3-0.

On Tuesday, Lauren Payne paced the Pandas with 12 points and Lucy Wilde added 11.

Madison Barfuss and Hanna Nunn each had eight points for the Cougars.

In junior girls play Tuesday night, the Magrath Pandas defeated the Cardston Cougars 52-27.

Annalise Anderson scored 13 points, while Wilde added 12. Lauren Wolsey led Cardston with 12 points.

In senior boys play Tuesday, the Catholic Central Cougars downed the Chinook Coyotes 103-82 at Chinook as Ben Hoveling hit for 28 points, followed by Nate Moreira with 20 and Shae Gibb and Joerge Osorio with 15 apiece. CJ Hirsche also hit double digits with 11.

Karson Valgardson replied with 22 points for the Coyotes while Liam Doyle added 21 and Boe Clarkson had 11.

The win was the Cougars’ first in three games.

The Coyotes beat the Cougars 61-50 in the JV game and are now 5-1 on the season.

Brenden Sermiento led Chinook with 11 points. Daniel Marcic replied with 16 for CCH and Indio Castro added 12.
