Over the years I have known two retired medical doctors who had worked in a two-tiered health-care system in the U.K. They were furious when Ralph Klein began promising a similar system in Alberta and their reasons made perfect sense.
First, we don’t have nearly enough doctors and nurses to make it work properly. Secondly, our populations aren’t concentrated like they are in Europe where it does work. Their third reason was the one that they were most concerned about because it will cost some rural Albertans their lives. There is no way you are going to be able to staff health-care facilities in rural Alberta if the doctors and nurses can make more money working in these private for-profit clinics and hospitals this scheme will create in the cities.
Over the years I have discussed this with many other doctors and nurses and every one of them has agreed that these doctors were right. This will create a horrific nightmare for rural Albertans, especially our fellow seniors, and will definitely cost some of them their lives.

unfortunately greed will prevail with the present “CONS”
thank you, fedup and phlushie. 2 tier only disrupts the quality of service and care those without the extra money will receive. no greater canadian have we had than tommy douglas. we sure could use a few of his character, compassion, wisdom and decency in today’s political mess.
As one of my American relatives says “Don’t let anyone destroy your Public Health Care System, trust me you don’t want ours”.
