Premier talks about ‘hostile acts’ but not those of her own government

By Lethbridge Herald on May 13, 2025.

Editor,

An open letter to Premier Smith

Mark Carney has just been newly elected as Canada’s prime minister. Apparently, Premier Smith is already warning him about hostile acts she believes he could enact against Alberta. What are hostile acts? In the consideration of brevity, I will not some of the threats to Albert that can be termed hostile acts:

1. Replacing our Canada Pension Plan with an Alberta Pension Plan.

2. Replacing our public health care with a private provincial plan. We can already see the mismanagement re: the recent scandal and attacks on our doctors and nurses.

3. The replacement of our RCMP with a costly provincial police service.

4. Underfunding of public education. How many Albertans can afford private schools?

5. The stubborn pursuit of coal mining in the Rocky Mountains, thus poisoning the water that supports our health and agriculture.

6. The hostile act of wanting to pull Alberta out of Confederation and an unwillingness to join the other provinces and territories to protect Canadian sovereignty. And what could Donald Trump desire to make Canada the 51st state and cripple our nation with terrible tariffs be called anything other than a heartbeat.

I wonder who the perpetrator of hostile acts could be?

Jim Culver

Mr. Culver is clearly hinging his unsubstantiated, uninformed comments on some isolated “coffee shop” gibberish.

We thankfully have a government in our province that stands up for our rights and obligations one that is definitely conservative.

For now Mr. Culver, sit back, fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride, the destination, an Alberta strong and free.

Apparently you don’t give a damn about our children and grandchildren’s future or what Global Warming could do to them, do you? .
Could you prove without a doubt, in court ,where they are going to find the $500 billion to cover the oil well cleanup mess that oilmen warn will soon happen, the present day $85 billion debt, cover the cost for 60 new schools and the $20 billion for road and bridge repairs, would you like to try????
The lawyers, accountants, economists, oilmen, bankers and former Conservative MLAs in my world don’t have an answer so let’s hear you explain where all this money is going to come from, that apparently you helped create, didn’t you???
It’s obvious that we are in this financial mess because of this and Norway and Alaska aren’t isn’t it?
“Royalties Down 32% Billions in Federal Revenue Lost”
So with you being so much smarter than the rest of us and a Danielle Smith ass -kisser let’s hear your solution to this disaster you helped create, we would like to hear you try so why don’t you ???

HaroldP

Which province or territory would you prefer over Alberta? 250k new residents to Alberta last year, think about that for a moment.

So what, its always been that way, but can you explain why Smith would invite all these people to move to Alberta and was too dumb to think about our lack of schools and hospitals, doctors, nurses, and teachers to handle it ? Which is why we have one of the highest unemployment rates in Canada, and highest needs for food banks in North America, as we are told.
With ties to the oil industry I haven’t forgotten Peter Lougheed telling Klein and Stelmach to slow down the growth of production of oil because we had no way to get it to the outside world, instead they said full steam ahead resulting in a disaster for Albertans when they weren’t collecting proper royalties and corporate taxes, just like they still aren’t and it’s why Alaskans and Norwegians are so rich and we are in financial ruin isn’t it? Jason Kenney was forced to finally cut production the situation was getting so bad.
Can you explain why Alaska has $80 billion in their Savings Account and every man, woman, and child has received $52,000. in total annual oil dividend cheques since 1982 and Peter Lougheed told our family he was planning on doing the same thing once he created a bigger savings accounts. So why have Albertans lost $1.2 trillion as a retired oil executive says we have?

Danielle Smith was the one who asked Justin Trudeau to increase immigration to Alberta, then she got mad at him and said it was too fast. She creates the problems and blames someone else for them. True Reform style.

Fedup Conservative

Are you going to ignore the fact that Smith was paying $5,000.to people to move to Alberta. As a lawyer pointed out when the atmosphere in the province is so bad you have to bribe people to move here you have a major problem?
Can you explain what it’s cost taxpayers and while at it tell us what her trips to the U.S. , Korea and Japan have cost us?

Dwayne.W

I’m originally from a very large farm, and I am well aware of how important water is for us all. It’s mid May, and we have finally started to see some rain in Alberta. April was bone dry. Maybe you have siblings, or parents, and grandparents who were around in the 1930s on the Prairies? My dad and his siblings, (except one sibling who passed away as an infant) and their parents were around then. So were my (late) mother, her older siblings and their parents. They know what it was like on the farm in the 1930s and in the 1940s. The drought we have been seeing now is much worse than back then. Danielle Smith wants these coal mines that will take up more of the scarce water. What good is that?

Harold, exactly which of points 1 to 6 cannot be laid at the doorstep of the premier’s office?

You mean the ones who accepted her bribes of $5,000. each? When the house prices are so high elsewhere why does that surprise you, it certainly isn’t because Smith is so popular.

Harold, aka, the man who couldn’t recognize a non sequitur as it stares in your face, it appears you have discovered the cut-and-paste function on your keyboard. It’s never too late to learn new things.

And speaking of learning new things, it would be helpful for you to realize that many Albertans are critical of the Smith Government precisely because we love living here and, from our perspective, which is clearly not yours, we want the government to do better.

For the record, I’ve lived in other parts of Canada, have travelled widely within Canada for pleasure and work, and there are many places I could live, but I choose to live here.

“Gibberish” indeed but from the mouth of HP, speaking as per usual from the steps of the pulpit.

Oh, I think about it all the time. Alberta has much to offer , but anyone who has travelled across this land would or should know that the landscape reflects diversity geographically and demographically. Time you got out more , but fact is you are comfy in your own little idyllic bubble surrounded by like minded people oblivious to the rest of the country and beyond.

Still waiting a reply from Harold. No surprise, since he is constantly trolling with repetitive questions , yet when someone answers, nothing else comes forth from Prophet. Best to ignore the constant babble rather than trying to engage in a reasoned debate.

HaroldP, you lived well as a federal government employee for decades, you didn’t break your back, had a nice union-protected job with free education for your children, WCB benefits, CPP benefits, good health insurance, and old-age pension.
You had job security and a good life-style, What would make you turn into a defender of Danielle and the separatist UCP.
Smell the roses, be happy with what you have reaped.

I, for one, think Premier Smith is doing a superlative job protecting foreign corporations from the long-term interests of Albertans and our country as a whole.

I’m particularly interested in seeing her ‘net-zero by 2050’ plan while she dismantles every incentive that might help achieve it (per the mandate of her Ministry of Creating Red Tape).

Fedup Conservative

While Alberta is collecting the lowest oil royalty rates in the world oilmen state and likely the lowest corporate taxes she feels so sorry for them she has to eliminate the Carbon Tax to help them become a lot richer, that’s how stupid she is, isn’t she?

Please do not insult our feathered friends. Parrots are higher up the evolutionary scale than one HP.

They likely are a lot smarter than him. He insists on proving how stupid he is doesn’t he? He is a Danielle Smith ass-kisser as friends call him, too stupid to understand what she is.

Fedup Conservative

She sure isn’t interested in looking after the well being of all Albertans like we saw under Lougheed and like Alaskans and Norwegians are receiving from their governments. Having talked to the people in their countries they are thrilled with how their governments are operating which is a far cry from how Albertans are being treated.

Dwayne.W

You are right. In Alaska, their citizens get annual dividends from their oil wealth. Here in Alberta, we got robbed blind, because Ralph Klein permanently altered Peter Lougheed’s great oil royalty rate structure, losing us $575 billion, and he left us with an enormous bill of $260 billion to remediate messes left behind by the oil companies in Alberta. How foolish is that?

Roberto

Mr. Culvert is right. The Premier is scared of her own shadow. She is a big menace to Albertans. I have been a victim of the private healthcare consequences of a doctor who refused to take me as a patient because I told her my visit was specifically to refill my medicines and nothing else. I was being charged for a cortisone injection, prescribed by my doctor, at a popular laboratory, and I refused to pay; I am one of the few patients who speak up, many others are afraid to lose the services. Good Mr. Culvert, you have the support of Albertans, except for those who profit from privatization

don’t we all want to live anywhere where graft, self service, greed, corruption, nepotism, an utter disdain for anything that is not human – and only the right kind of human, such as white, preferably male, “straight”, god-fearing christian, paranoid, hater, bigoted – and being habitat destruction oriented such that that is called development are each considered the norm? heck, when smitty has had her run maybe those folk can all get in line behind you?
