Brian Jean has zero credibility when it comes to coal mines

By Lethbridge Herald on July 1, 2025.

Editor,

On June 11, Premier Danielle Smith and several ministers held a town hall in the Fort Macleod Community Hall, the topic, coal mines and our water. During that event, Brian Jean can be seen literally shouting over objecting constituents instead of interacting like an intelligent person might.

Feb 8, 2021, Brian Jean wrote an open letter to then-Premier Jason Kenney in opposition of coal mines, citing much of the rationale used every day now. Unfortunately, Energy Minister Brian Jean holds a completely different opinion than citizen Brian Jean.

When asked about Northback’s many opportunities to seek approval to operate at Grassy Mountain, Brian Jean said, “It took me five tries to get my drivers license.”

Yes, that’s how Jean responded.

Northback failed miserably when it applied to operate a coal mine at Grassy Mountain. Since the AER decision in 2021, both Smith and Jean have made repeated attempts to circumvent that rejection and Jean compares that to his inability to drive a car.

This explains a lot.

Smith and Jean are singularly focused on allowing Northback to operate a coal mine at Grassy Mountain. They aren’t listening to the science, they aren’t respecting their own regulator nor are they considering Jean’s own words urging Jason Kenney to stop this.

Brian Jean has proven he has no integrity and must be disqualified from the mines vs water debate. We see who you are. You apparently stand with Albertans to save our water when it suits your interests, like getting elected. But, when you can actually make a difference, you reverse course and join the side doing the threatening.

Five Shot Brian, your pliable ethics aside, we only get one chance to protect our water and you have already encouraged damaging exploration which is occurring as I write this.

Here’s hoping one day, we get an energy minister who only takes three tries to pass their drivers test. Alberta deserves better.

Thank God for self-driving cars, eh Brian!

Fedup Conservative

Wouldn’t you like know what’s in it for Brian Jean, should he be required to explain it in court, what do you think? Get him under oath where he can’t lie.
About 50 years ago I told a lawyer that I thought lawyers were nothing more than trained liars and much to my surprise he agreed that many were. Especially the ones who can’t make it as lawyers and become politicians he said. The exception was Peter Lougheed you could trust him.
You certainly can’t believe Jean, can you?

Great comments Blaine it’s no secret that Reformers will do anything or say anything to keep themselves in power, and will deliberately destroy everything conservatives have created for the good of the people. What’s so disturbing is the fact that so many of the mindless fools believe every lie they feed them, and most are seniors.
These Reformers had no business taking Lougheed’s protection off our mountains and if they had been charging proper oil royalties and corporate taxes there would be no need for it.

jean exemplifies much of what is wrong with politics managing society. like smitty, and far too many others, the focus is how to make enrich oneself in terms of power and wealth, big picture be damned. this type cannot help themselves, and they feel being sly and sleazy is akin to being smart and resourceful. for the brunt of what we accept as being worthy of good governance, the materialism and ego have far more importance than goodness, fairness, and honour. the natural world be damned for a few bucks, eh?
tries to pass a driver’s test? they deal those cards out to everyone.

And these are the people a third of Albertans believe should run a sovereign nation. “Houston there’s a problem … “

lol, only it makes one cry, too.

Quote from blog at albertapolitics.ca re: the Fort Macleod coal mining meeting:
“Brian Jean will say anything. From bragging about hanging out at the Legion in Fort Mac to asking the audience if they had snowmobiles in southern Alberta. Energy Minister Brian Jean’s performance was a delerious trainwreck. The best moment came when he told the room that royalties on coal are way too low (and that they should be modernized).”
The word, “dolt” comes to mind, and this is part and parcel of our wrecking ball UCP government….unreal.

The UCP is desperately trying to get themselves out of the hole they dug when they reversed their mining policy and caused the mining companies to file those ridiculous lawsuits against Alberta. Most of the opinions I’ve read say that if the govt is found liable the awards would be much less then demanded but still in the millions of dollars. I suggest the govt should tell those companies we’ll see u in court and get the hell out of our province. Us taxpayers are stuck with any settlement so let’s shutdown all mining on the eastern slopes and not pollute our water supply any more then it already is,
