Bank of Canada rate hikes pushing Canada into a recession

By Lethbridge Herald on November 4th, 2022

Editor: Both the UCP and NDP have been very critical of the Bank of Canada’s (B of C) rapid interest rate increases, citing the hardship it is causing Canadians, in fact NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was interviewed on CTV saying “there’s absolutely no merit” to the banks approach to fighting inflation. Both parties are calling ... Read More »

Council should examine needs before going on a hiring spree

By Lethbridge Herald on November 2nd, 2022

Editor: After reading The Lethbridge Herald’s report on the budget requests from the different administrative departments I can see why the homeowners of Lethbridge – me included – are looking at a 3.77 per cent increase in taxes in each of the next four years. It seems like there are a lot of 0.5 full-time ... Read More »

People on AISH deserve support from the provincial government

By Lethbridge Herald on November 2nd, 2022

Editor: One of Rachel Notley’s many achievements during her time in office was to index the Assured Income for the Handicapped program (AISH for short). The NDP did this so that Alberta’s disabled community would be able to keep pace with inflation. Soon after, the UCP provincial government reversed the NDP decision, causing the real ... Read More »

Victims of vehicle damage unfairly treated by the system

By Lethbridge Herald on November 2nd, 2022

Editor: For those drawn into a relatively minor fender bender at no fault of their own, too many are made aware of a consistently overlooked blindspot in the current system of settling the matter, one that constitutes a failure to protect the basic interests of the innocent. Penalties are possibly imposed upon anyone reporting said ... Read More »

Alberta government seems intent on shredding the social contract

By Lethbridge Herald on October 29th, 2022

Editor: The recent death of Queen Elizabeth has receded quickly with none of the imperial ramifications of the death of her great-great-grandmother Victoria, and certainly none of the dangerous tumult when a Caesar might fall in the heady days of the Roman Empire. Safe to say that when you’re hightailing it north out of Calgary, ... Read More »

Height and age rules for diving board at city pool are unfair

By Lethbridge Herald on October 28th, 2022

Kids all over the world like jumping off the three-metre diving board. That’s not available to kids in Lethbridge at Stan Siwik family pool.  There are new regulations in place that say if you aren’t a certain height or age (age 13) (height 1.35 m) you can’t jump off. The Lifesaving Society guidelines are being ... Read More »

Council needs to make life in Lethbridge more affordable

By Lethbridge Herald on October 26th, 2022

Editor: So the city wants to increase property taxes over the next four years by 15 per cent. As it is, we have some of the highest property taxes in Alberta. The only things new I have noticed are all the new city vehicles and the revitalization of the downtown core, which most people avoid ... Read More »

‘Vulnerable’ should refer to people in city who don’t feel safe

By Lethbridge Herald on October 26th, 2022

Editor: I have four concerns: 1) If 70 per cent of the homeless in Lethbridge are Indigenous, why is the Blackfoot Confederacy not helping them be re-housed in Indigenous communities where they could be supported by their cultures? Then Lethbridge would have enough services to help the other 30 per cent. If that isn’t going ... Read More »

Premier continuing a UCP tradition

By Lethbridge Herald on October 26th, 2022

Editor: So Danielle Smith is targeting Alberta Health Services as the source of Alberta’s pandemic misfortunes.  The new premier continues in the UCP tradition of misunderstanding, mismanaging and misrepresenting Albertans’ pandemic experience. She and this government continue to refuse to take some responsibility for the recurring COVID catastrophes of the past two-and-a-half years including over ... Read More »

Progress can impact us in negative ways

By Lethbridge Herald on October 21st, 2022

Editor: One day, my mother’s old rotary telephone died. The new one in her room of the senior’s home was with push buttons. Mom could not handle the new gizmo though it was supposed to be easier to use. She stopped calling me at an ungodly hour like 3 a.m. I thought she had no ... Read More »

Opinions can be expressed without showing disrespect to others

By Lethbridge Herald on October 19th, 2022

Editor: As I’ve watched and listened to world events near and far over the last few years, I’ve tried hard to make sense of it all.  In my 75+ years on this earth, I don’t recall a time when people seem so far apart and sometimes downright nasty when it concerns their personal views of ...
