Lethbridge Regional Police Service has charged a 32-year-old man in connection with an incident where an underage girl was allegedly lured online and paid for sexual favours.
The matter was reported to police in April 2014 and a lengthy investigation ensued. The investigation determined a man met a 13-year-old girl online through Instagram in the fall of 2013. After exchanging a number of messages, police said chats via Kik ensued, and the victim was allegedly propositioned the for sex in exchange for money. Police added conversations continued and the victim was sexually assaulted on multiple occasions between November of 2013 and January of 2014.
The investigation concluded June 11, 2015 with the arrest of a man.
Joseph Javin Birky, 32, of Lethbridge, is charged with two counts of child luring and one count each of sexual assault, sexual interference and abduction of a child under the age of 14.
Birky was remanded in custody and appeared in court today. His matter was adjourned until June 19.
