New home construction slowed across Canada in 2018. But Lethbridge continued to lead the way among mid-sized Alberta communities.
Year-end reports from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. show construction of 560 homes started in Lethbridge and area during 2018, compared to 272 in Red Deer and 167 in Grande Prairie.
That was down from 769 starts a year earlier in the Lethbridge “metropolitan area,” which includes Coaldale, Coalhurst and smaller centres within Lethbridge County.
CMHC figures include duplex units, condos, apartment suites, townhouses and other configurations as well as single-family homes.
Grande Prairie was down by 27, the federal agency reports, while Red Deer was 41 higher than the year previous.
But Medicine Hat was the year’s pleasant surprise. Builders there made a start on 346 new homes, a dramatic improvement from 140 in 2017.
