AFP is an organization made up of fundraising professionals working in the charitable sector. The mission is to empower individuals and organizations to practise ethical fundraising through professional education, networking, research and advocacy.

There are over 30,000 individual and organizational AFP members around the world and the Southern Alberta Chapter was created in 2011 by a group of like-minded peers who work together to encourage and build a sense of unity, with the goal of building a better community.

Lethbridge residents benefit enormously from the charitable giving of local individuals, groups and businesses. In November, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Southern Alberta Chapter (AFP), celebrates this good fortune.

One of the ways AFP is advocating for philanthropy in our community is through an annual celebration luncheon, The Inspiring Philanthropy Awards. On Nov. 14, AFP will celebrate National Philanthropy day with the fifth annual awards luncheon. AFP and our community will honour six incredible individuals, businesses and groups who give their time, talent, and treasure to help make Lethbridge and southern Alberta a great place to live, work and play.

The idea started in the United States in 1986. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day. Canada has formally recognized NPD since 2012 and Lethbridge has been celebrating it since 2015. What started as the Inspiring Philanthropy luncheon in Lethbridge in 2015, has spread to celebrating philanthropy in the greater Lethbridge region the week of NPD in many different ways, including lighting up city hall, a philanthropy crosswalk, digital signage that reads “#thanksYQL,” and making the AFP luncheon bigger and better!

The Inspiring Philanthropy luncheon, presented by the Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta, is the headlining event for this year’s NPD celebrations. This event is an opportunity for individuals in the community to come together and celebrate those who give back in a big way. The past five years has seen AFP recognize amazing businesses, individuals and groups, and this year is no different:

Corporate Philanthropist – MNP, nominated by Youth One

Individual/Family Philanthropist – Toby & Bernadine Boulet, nominated by KidSport Lethbridge & Taber

Philanthropic Group – Fran Rude, Ken Rogers, & Nancy Graham, nominated by Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization; The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club, nominated by United Way of Lethbridge and South Western Alberta

Small Business Philanthropist – Michael Marcotte & Prime Catering, nominated by STARS Foundation

Youth Philanthropist – Carter Eli, nominated by the Queer Impact Club

Join us as we celebrate these honourees by purchasing tickets to the Inspiring Philanthropy luncheon on Nov. 14 and feel the spirit of generosity! This event will leave you feeling inspired and thankful to be living in this community.
