The third week of October is Waste Reduction Week in Canada.

So, this week the City of Lethbridge is encouraging all residents to participate in events and take time to consider new waste-reduction strategies in their everyday lives. Each day this week will recognize a new theme with activities and events and city hall will be lit green and blue to recognize the 2019 Waste Reduction Week.

Monday’s theme was circular economy. Promoting a circular economy is about avoiding products that are purchased, used and disposed of and instead choosing products that are made of recycled material or can be reused or repurposed.

Tuesday’s theme was textiles. It encourages residents to think about the environmental impacts of clothing production and encourages repairing, repurposing and reusing.

Wednesday’s theme was champions and innovators. Do you know a champion or innovator in waste reduction? Check out Environment Lethbridge’s list of Green Heroes from last year and see who was nominated in 2019 at https://environmentlethbridge.ca/greensuperhero/.

Today’s theme is plastics with a free workshop to learn how you can turn old T-shirts into reusable shopping bags. Register here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/75949000505/.

Friday’s theme is food waste. Visit Environment Lethbridge’s new website http://wasteless.ca/food to learn more. Take the wasteless lunch challenge and pack your own wasteless lunch. Share on social media using #ShowMeYourLunch.

Saturday’s theme: swap, share, repair. Swapping, sharing, or refurbishing extends product/material lifecycles and diverts them from disposal. Residents are encouraged to think about the lifecycle of their materials and learn more about sustainable consumption, the sharing economy, and extending the life of materials through reuse at https://wrwcanada.com/en/2019-theme-days/saturday-swap-share-repair.

Sunday’s theme is e-waste. Use the Waste Wizard Tool to find out where you can bring your old and damaged electronics. http://www.lethbridge.ca.wastewizard.
