One of two men wanted in connection to a robbery and assault at the city’s supervised consumption site earlier in the week was remanded into custody following a brief hearing Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court.
July Austin Red Crow, 20, who appeared by closed-circuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, is scheduled to return to court Friday. He is charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of release conditions.
The charges stem from an incident at about 6:24 a.m. Monday when two men approached another man while he was speaking with some friends outside the consumption site. Both men approached the victim from behind, punched him, then kicked him to the ground, police later reported in a news release.
The assailants, one of whom pulled out a knife, demanded the man empty his pockets and give them money or drugs, or he would be stabbed. Even though the victim showed he didn’t have money or drugs, the two suspects insisted he did and threatened to take him somewhere else. They didn’t make good on their threat and left the area.
The victim did not require medical attention.
Surveillance video at the site captured the robbery and helped police identify the two suspects, and warrants were issued for their arrest.
Melvin George North Peigan, 30, is charged with robbery in relation to the incident.
