For anyone facing library fines on late items, the Lethbridge Public Library is giving them a chance for a clean slate going into the new year, while helping out a local organization.

Lethbridge Public Library is teaming up with local food banks to encourage community members with late fines to participate with the Food for Fines program, running Dec. 1-15.

During the campaign, anyone with late fines can donate food for the local food banks instead of paying the fines to the Library. Donations are applicable only to late fines; they cannot be used in place of lost items or other account charges.

Donations of non-perishable food items are accepted, and the library encourages donations that are within date, not past expiry, for the most benefit to the local food banks. Each food item donated will equate to $5 off library fines, and four ramen packages will account for one item.

Donations will be accepted at the main branch, 810 5 Ave. S., at the Crossings branch, 225 Britannia Blvd. W., and at the Bookmobile at its various stops throughout the city. For more information on Christmas programs and events to assist those less fortunate, contact either local food bank, or visit Christmas
