Two award-winning choirs will be part of the Mayor’s Christmas Concert on Saturday.
The Lethbridge Community Bands will also welcome a Lethbridge-area composer to their seasonal concert, 7:30 p.m. at Southminster United Church.
Children’s choirs from ƒcole Agnes Davidson Elementary School will join the Silver and Gold bands during the festive event.
“We have never had that big of a group perform with us before,” says spokesperson Mandy Nilsson. “It should be spectacular!”
The choirs have won awards in southern Alberta for their outstanding performances, she points out, and they appeared with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra last year. They’re directed by Meagan Thorlakson.
In addition Gold Band member Graeme Roset, who wrote “Fantasy for Piano and Wind Orchestra,” has arranged a new setting for the occasion. He’ll present it on piano with accompaniment by the Gold Band.
“It is an absolutely stunning number and we are so pleased that he put the time and effort in to premiere his composition at our 28th annual Mayor’s Christmas concert.”
Directing the community bands this year are Samuel Yamamoto (Silver Band) and Mark Ward (Gold Band.)
“Come participate in this annual tradition and bring along a donation in support of the Lethbridge Food Bank and Interfaith Food Bank’s Christmas Hope Campaign,” Nilsson says.
Since its inception, the Lethbridge Community Band Society has partnered with local food banks to assist with the collection of funds and donations that help families in need over the holiday season.
To continue the Christmas spirit of the evening, she adds, the bands invite all who attend to join them afterward for a “hot chocolate reception.”
Tickets, priced at $15 but free for children 12 and under, are available in person at Casa, online at lcbs.yapsody.com or at the door.
