Cardston RCMP are confirming that a man who died as a result of a hotel fire in Cardston on Christmas Day likely committed suicide.

At shortly after midnight on Christmas Day, Cardston RCMP and Cardston County Fire and Emergency Services (CCFES) received several 911 calls regarding a structure fire at a motel in the Town of Cardston.

Cardston RCMP and CCFES arrived on scene and began an evacuation of all occupied rooms to ensure the safety of those unaware of the situation. Witnesses reported seeing a male inside the motel who was not departing his room.

Cardston RCMP members and CCFES gained entry to the room and located one adult male inside who was gravely injured. The male was transported to Chinook Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Herald contacted the Cardston RCMP on Thursday, and a spokesperson for the detachment confirmed the male likely had taken his own life.

The Cardston RCMP is encouraging those who feel alone or in crisis over the holidays, or any time of the year, to contact the Alberta Health Services Mental Health Help Line at 1-877-303-2642, or 911 if it is an immediate emergency.
