The Lethbridge Police Service, in partnership with Circle K/Mac’s and Crimestoppers, officially launched its new Operation Heat/Freeze campaign on Friday.

Lethbridge officers will be given free coffee or hot chocolate coupons to distribute in the winter months for the Operation Heat phase and free Froster coupons to distribute in the summer months during the Operation Freeze phase. The coupons will be given out to reward positive behaviour when officers see it while out on patrol. The coupons can be used at any Mac’s or Circle K store in Western Canada.

“This is just a good way for us to reward positive behaviour,” explained Const. Shawn Davis. “A lot of times people think police are out there to punish poor behaviour, and it’s nice to have community partners, whether it’s Crime Stoppers and Circle K involved, to go out there to see some of our kids and marginalized people to give them some coupons to promote good behaviour.”

Crime Stoppers and Circle K/Mac’s will be donating 3,000 Operation Heat coupons and 2,500 Operation Freeze coupons to LPS officers, Watch members and the LPS Community Peace Officers this year.

Davis said individual officers will have a lot of latitude to decide when and where to give out coupons.

“That’s going to depend on the officer,” he confirmed. “It could be a matter of helping to clear off snow, helping someone across the street – a kid wearing his bicycle helmet- we want to promote them to keep doing this.”
