A 20-year-old Lethbridge man is facing robbery charges after the suspect was taken into custody by Lethbridge Police at the scene of the crime.

On Wednesday at about 2:30 a.m., police say a masked man entered Circle K along the 2700 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South, demanded cash and threatened to harm the clerk if he did not comply. An undisclosed amount of money, gift cards and cigarettes were taken, police said in a news release.

Police say the clerk was not injured and was able to press a panic button. A police officer patrolling in the area immediately responded and located the subject still inside the store just as he was preparing to leave.

Police say the man attempted to push past the officer and a brief struggle ensued before he was taken into custody.

Ahmed Babatunde, 20, is charged with robbery, disguised with intent, resisting a peace officer, unlawful confinement and assault. Babatunde is in custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.
