Holy Spirit Catholic School Division has announced that Patrick Leahy, a first-year teacher at St. Paul School in Lethbridge, has been selected as the division’s Edwin Parr nominee for 2020.

The Edwin Parr Award recognizes the outstanding work and excellence in teachers at the beginning of their professional careers.

“Patrick is so authentic,” said Gerry Muldoon, St. Paul principal. “He’s a natural at building connections with his students, all of his students. He has a way of reaching out to those who really need a little help and he builds their confidence.”

Leahy says he is very excited to be selected out of the school division for the award and that he is being recognized early in his career for his work.

“It’s always amazing to be recognized as doing a great job in any profession, but to have sat in on our Faith Formation session with other first-year teachers and seeing the things that they are doing, and then to be selected from that group, is huge,” said Leahy.

With the presentation of the Edwin Parr Award up in the air this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Leahy says the recognition from the district is nice but his students remain his top priority through this crisis.

“People take priority over personal recognition,” said Leahy. “I really care about my students and I miss them, but their safety is the most important thing right now.”
