The Southern Alberta Technology Council (SATC), which has organized the Lethbridge Regional Science Fair and Science Olympics since 2002, is moving forward with this year’s virtual event. Project evaluation is complete and the event is now in the public phase.

The public event features a virtual showcase of the submitted projects as well as a live awards ceremony at 7 p.m. today. The award ceremony will be hosted over Zoom and streamed to YouTube. A link to the streaming event is also available on the SATC website.

The project showcase will be available until Monday, with links to the individual project video submissions.

“I was really amazed at the projects that were submitted to our virtual event this year,” says Dr. Locke Spencer, SATC president and Canada Research Chair in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Lethbridge.

“We have seen these projects with a new perspective, and we certainly have great examples of turning lemons into lemonade with respect to creativity, exploration, measurement and global awareness, not to mention some impressive audio and video editing skills.”

Below are some of the comments received from volunteer project judges:

– “Wow – there are some very talented, intelligent youth who contributed. Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of it,” said William Hillary, senior electrical engineer with the City of Lethbridge.

– “I enjoyed this format, some of the videos included demos that could never be done on the gym track,” said executive director of TechBridge Innovation Centre, Tyler Forster.

– “Thanks to the entire SATC committee for adapting the regional science fair, rather than just cancelling,” said Scott Gillespie, Plants Dig Soil consultant. “I missed seeing the students face to face, but I could see they did a lot of work and were really excited to still be able to present their work. Learning how to present on a video from home will likely serve them well into the future.”

To host the Lethbridge Regional Science Fair and Science Olympics, SATC is sponsored by the City of Lethbridge, University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge College, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Quantum Alberta, and many other local and regional sponsors.
