Property tax deadline Sept. 30 to avoid late penalties

By Jensen, Randy on September 24, 2020.

LETHBRIDGE HERALD

The City of Lethbridge is reminding property owners that 2020 tax accounts must be paid in full by Sept. 30 to avoid being penalized.

This spring city council approved changes to 2020 property tax penalty dates and reduced penalties for 2020 tax accounts to help residents impacted by the financial effects of COVID-19.

As of Oct. 1 any outstanding property tax balances will have a three per cent penalty applied, which amounts to $30 for every $1,000 in outstanding property taxes. The penalty is four per cent on Nov. 1 and five per cent on Dec. 1. For more information visit lethbridge.ca/taxes2020.

The tax deadline and penalties do not apply to property owners who pay monthly through the City’s Tax Instalment Prepayment Plan (TIPP).

If you have recently purchased property and/or have not received a 2020 Tax Notice, contact Taxation at tax@lethbridge.ca. Late payment penalties will not be waived if you did not receive your tax notice.

Cash, cheques and debit card payments are accepted by cashiers on the main floor at City Hall, 910 4 Ave. S., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To avoid potential lineups and maintain proper distancing requirements, taxpayers are encouraged not to leave payments until the last minute.

If you have online banking, you can pay your taxes electronically using the 13-digit roll number located in the top right section of your tax notice. Cheques or money orders (do not enclose cash) can also be dropped off using the drop box at the front door of city hall or the drive-thru drop box in the circle behind city hall. The City does not accept credit card payments.

Property owners can sign up to receive their future property tax notices by email or view their 2020 property tax notice online at http://www.lethbridge.ca/MyCity.

Another way to avoid late payment penalties in the future is to enroll in the monthly Tax Instalment Prepayment Plan (TIPP), which reduces your tax with a 0.75 per cent annual discount credit. Property owners whose 2020 taxes are paid in full can sign up for TIPP before Oct. 20 to be enrolled in the program for their 2021 property taxes. Visit http://www.lethbridge.ca/tipp.
