An outbreak has been declared by Alberta Health Services at Winston Churchill High School, the Lethbridge School Division announced on Wednesday.
There were three positive cases of COVID-19 confirmed at the school on Tuesday and as a result the school is required to follow AHS direction and protocols.
At this time, based on AHS, Churchill will remain open, the division said. AHS has proceeded with defining close contacts of the three cases within the school context and those individuals will be contacted by the school through an emailed letter and individually by AHS as close contacts.
Those individuals will be required to quarantine immediately for the period defined by AHS.
AHS said in a letter to parents or guardians the risk of the general population in the school becoming infected because of these cases is low.
It marked the second outbreak in four days for the school division, which received notice on Sunday of a COVID-19 outbreak of two cases at Immanuel Christian Secondary School.
There was also one COVID-19 case identified at Immanuel Christian Elementary School on Sunday, while Coalbanks Elementary School was recently notified of one case of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division announced late Tuesday one COVID-19 case had been confirmed at Catholic Central High School.
As of Tuesday, the Holy Spirit division has five active cases across three school sites (Ecole St. Mary, St. Francis, Catholic Central) requiring the isolation of 78 staff and students.
Public Health has provided recommendations to the schools about cleaning measures and other control measures to reduce the risk of further transmission.
The South Zone had an increase of 20 active cases in the past 24 hours while in Lethbridge the active case count increased by two to 157 with 315 recovered, an increase of 10. There have also been three deaths.
