A 37-year-old Piikani man accused of killing a teenage boy last summer has hired a high-profile Calgary lawyer.
Dustin Big Bull, who is charged in the death of 16-year-old Tregan Crow Eagle, has hired Calgary lawyer Balfour Der to defend him against charges of second-degree murder and causing an indignity to human remains.
The matter was in Lethbridge provincial court for the first time Tuesday, where an agent for defence said Der had only been retained Monday and needs time to review the case.
On July 27 Crow Eagle’s remains were found wrapped in a tarp at a dumpsite on the Piikani Nation. The teen had earlier been reported missing and was last seen on July 22.
Following a judicial interim release hearing after his arrest, Big Bull was remanded to appear in court hearing Monday. His personal appearance was not required, however, and the matter was adjourned to Nov. 24.
