OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is convening an emergency first ministers’ meeting on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of steep new U.S. tariffs.

His announcement comes after president-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25 per cent import tariff on Canada and Mexico the day he takes office in January.

Trump made the threat on Truth Social on Monday night, saying the tariffs would be in effect until Canada and Mexico stop illegal border crossings and prevent drugs like fentanyl from entering the U.S.

Trudeau says he had a good call with Trump Monday evening after those remarks.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford had requested an urgent meeting between the premiers and prime minister to prepare for the incoming Trump administration.

Trudeau also spoke with Ford and other premiers on Monday night.
