CALGARY – RCMP say a woman accused of smuggling drugs into Canada tried to swallow a number of heroin pellets to avoid detection upon arrival at the Calgary airport.
Police and the Canada Border Services Agency say the 38-year-old foreign national arrived in Calgary on Nov. 22, where agency members discovered she had ingested the pellets.
They also found heroin concealed in her suitcase.
About 1,350 grams of the drug was eventually seized.
In a message posted to Twitter, the CBSA says swallowing narcotics to evade detection is extremely dangerous and agency officers potentially saved a life.
Mariam Salehe remains in custody and will appear in court Friday on charges of importing a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
