BROOKS, Alta. – Harrison Israels’s goal midway through the second period stood as the winner as the Oakville Blades held on to defeat the Portage Terriers 5-4 on Tuesday at the Canadian junior A hockey championship.
Josh Nixon and Spencer Kersten had a goal and an assist apiece for Oakville (1-2-0). Kyle Lewis and Alton McDermott rounded out the offence.
Ty Barnstable had back-to-back power-play goal 17 seconds apart in the third period to pull the Terriers (0-3-0) within a goal. Scott Mickoski and Joey Moffatt also scored.
Blades goaltender Will Barber stopped 21 shots. Nathan Moore and Ethan Peterson combined on 27 saves for Portage.
Later Tuesday, the host Brooks Bandits (3-0-0) stayed undefeated with a 2-1 win over the Ottawa Jr. Senators (1-2-0). Jakob Lee scored the go-ahead goal in the first period.
