Alberta to investigate police crackdown on pro-Palestinian campus protests

EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government will ask the province’s police watchdog to investigate how officers forcibly cleared out two pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses.

Smith said reports of potential injuries prompted the move to ask the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team to make sure there was no unreasonable use of force.

But Smith stressed that public safety remains paramount.

“I support the right of the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary to ensure a safe environment for all of their students,” Smith told the house Monday during question period.

“There is a way to peacefully protest, and you have to protest in compliance with the law.

“We have watched as protests have gotten out of control at UCLA, at Columbia (University in New York), where the universities were trashed and vandalized and Jewish students were made to feel unwelcome and fearful.

“These are the kinds of things that they have to make sure that they are on guard for, so that it doesn’t get out of control.”

Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis told reporters the government supports everyone’s right to lawful protest, but law enforcement agencies and universities are independent of government.

“I respect their concerns. They made the choice to contact law enforcement,” he said.

Opposition NDP Leader Rachel Notley called for an investigation into those decisions, saying the removal of protesters and tents appeared over the top compared with the perceived threat.

“I was very deeply troubled by the spectre of seeing young Albertans peppered with rubber bullets, and people marching in with batons,” she told reporters.

“It was an incredibly disproportionate response.”

Late last week and over the weekend, the University of Alberta in Edmonton and the University of Calgary called in police to clear protest encampments within hours of tents going up.

The universities issued statements saying they respect free speech but that the encampments violated trespassing rules and risked escalating into violence.

Protest organizers at the University of Alberta said the only threat of violence came from police, who were seen on social media videos advancing on demonstrators and swinging batons.

University of Alberta President Bill Flanagan, in a weekend statement, said protesters had collected wooden pallets – a fire hazard “known to be used to make barricades.”

Protest organizers said the pallets were there to support tents in case of heavy rain and were removed hours before police took action.

The Calgary encampment was cleared out late Thursday, with videos and news footage showing flashbang explosives and police clashing with a few remaining protesters.

The next day, Smith applauded the Calgary removal and said she hoped the University of Alberta would take heed. The Edmonton encampment was dismantled in similar fashion less than 24 hours later, as the sun rose early Saturday.

Over the weekend, the University of Alberta cited police saying there were no injuries – a claim disputed by protest organizers.

On Monday, Edmonton police spokesman Scott Pattison declined to estimate how many people, if any, were injured during the clearing of the camp.

He told The Canadian Press that police welcome a police watchdog review, given the public interest.

The protests are among several recent demonstrations on academic campuses in Canada and the United States in response to Israel’s offensive in the West Bank and Gaza.

Many have demanded institutions make clear if their investments are helping fund Israel and its military in the conflict. They want any investments halted.

I certainly hope that the organizers of these protests are being investigated as well.
The Students for Justice in Palestine is not a reputable non-profit but in proven reports were given a call to arms by the Hamas terrorist group as they launched the October 7th attack, to begin protests across North America. It is a fact! There is a lawsuit in the US proving it!
Also, as many of us have always suspected, the casualties in Gaza were inflated for propaganda for Hamas to gain world support and the news services didn’t care, they only want to sell the news. The truth is rarely reported by many of the once reputable organizations such as the CBC, BBC, Al Jazeera, Global, the Canadian Press and Associated Press!
The UN announced that the civilian women and children deaths were half what was reported, and it is suspected much lower.
Military analysts have been stating just by the numbers, it would be impossible for those stats to be true, but the media sucked it up and misled the world!
Many of the protesters are professional protesters and not students! Have you noticed most of the banners/placards/wording are all the same across the country? Doesn’t that show ‘organization and collaboration’?
How can we allow organizations who push for genocide against the Jews to take over our educational institutions and make demands, while pushing for support for terrorists?
Are you serious? Can we not think and find truth anymore?
These protesters should be investigated and the radical students expelled and deported as persona non grata!
This goes much deeper than just free speech!
Read this:
The senators wrote, “We write to demand you open an investigation to determine if the supporters of the National Students for Justice in Palestine (NSJP), including the AJP Educational Foundation (AJP), the Tides Foundation, the Westchester Peace Action Committee Foundation (WESPAC Foundation), and other benefactors of NSJP have engaged in conduct warranting revocation of their tax-exempt statuses on the basis of their financial support of NSJP.”
In the letter, the lawmakers note that victims of the October 7th attack have sued AJP and NSJP for being Hamas’s propaganda division in the United States and their “control” over Students for Justice in Palestine chapters, which have been protesting on college campuses. They also noted the organizations’ use of protest planning materials in the immediate aftermath of Hamas’s assault on Israel—which may have been created before the attack.

“One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” ― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

It is a criminal code violation to call for genocide for any peoples.
Advocating genocide

  • 318 (1) Every person who advocates or promotes genocide is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than five years.
  • Definition of genocide
  • (2) In this section, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy in whole or in part any identifiable group, namely,
  • (a) killing members of the group; or
  • (b) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction.

When advocating genocide by assembling, it breaches the right to assemble.

‘…Most Canadian human rights laws prohibit publishing or displaying material that expresses an intention to discriminate, implies discrimination, or intends to incite others to discriminate.14 The Supreme Court has recognized that eliminating the spread of hatred is part of the broader goal of addressing discrimination….’
“…3.1  Hate Propaganda….Hate propaganda provisions were first added to the Criminal Code in 197024 in response to the recommendation of the Special Committee on Hate Propaganda in Canada that a law be established to prohibit advocating genocide and inciting hatred of particular groups, where these activities are likely to occasion breach of the peace.25 ….’
‘….Hatred is predicated on destruction, and hatred against identifiable groups therefore thrives on insensitivity, bigotry and destruction of both the target group and of the values of our society. Hatred in this sense is a most extreme emotion that belies reason; an emotion that, if exercised against members of an identifiable group, implies that those individuals are to be despised, scorned, denied respect and made subject to ill‑treatment on the basis of group affiliation.34…’

Biden recently announced that he won’t supply certain weapons or bombs if Israel attacks Rafah in one of the Occupied territories of Palestine. It was in no small part due to student demos that forced that change. Thank you to the informed students that are trying to save lives, many of whom are women and children.
Israel’s 2000 lb. bombs have a 365 meter lethal fragmentation radius. Look at the pictures of children’s body parts on line. The ones that Zionists try to suppress the coverage of or say they are all fake. The U.N. has reported numerous times on the number of members of the press that have been killed and targeted in the occupied territories.
This is not a war, it is a genocide. The illegal occupation for some 75 years started this, not Oct. 6th.
More and more Palestinians are being evicted from their homes, often at night by settlers in the Westbank. Israel is promoting plans for Gaza redevelopment that don’t include Palestinians- more land grabs. Which have been nonstop for 75 years. The massacres have been well researched and documented, starting with the Jewish terrorists organizations kidnapping and murdering British soldiers in about 1946. (King David Hotel bombing- well documented -look it up. Many other incidents as well)
The last ceasefire agreement Hamas accepted and Israel rejected.
This is well documented ethnic cleansing and a huge land and resource grab.
Lots of independent facts from many, many sources. This has finally prompted the International Criminal court(the Hague)to organize arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his Israeli war cabinet. Many, many years overdue.
As I say many sources of facts for those who seek the truth with independent research. Goggle, Canada Park in Israel for one small example. The U.N. has countless documents listing Israeli war crimes too. Well written , researched and backed up by international humanitarian laws.
