The Coaldale Copperheads have secured first place in the Heritage
Junior Hockey League Southern Division as well as the first-round
playoff bye that come with it.
Coming down to their final regular season game, the Copperheads
clinched first place and held off the second-place Okotoks Bisons
thanks to a 3-2 win over the Ponoka Stampeders Saturday night in Ponoka.
With the win, the Copperheads finish the regular season at 28-7-2, two
points ahead of the of 27-7-4 Bisons.
On Saturday, Jayden Smith scored the game-winner for the Copperheads
with 1:53 remaining for the win and top spot in the south.
Jedd Horvath and Ty Abbott added the other Coaldale goals.
Nolan Berner made 33 saves in the winning cause.
The timeline for the second round is Feb. 19 to March 3.
The Copperheads will have home advantage for the entire south division
playoffs. They will be playing second round lowest seeded team
winners after the outcome of Cochrane Generals and High River Flyers
and the Strathmore Wheatland Chiefs and the Medicine Hat Cubs.
Admission for the Copperheads second round series is $10 for adults
and $5 for youth.
