Cardston advances to semis at 4A Boys provincials

The Alberta Schools Athletic Association basketball provincials hit the court for the opening day of action across Alberta.

4A Boys and Girls at Edmonton

South Zone champion Cardston Cougars, seeded fourth, have advanced to today’s semifinals of the 4A Boys provincials.

Cougars opened with a victory, topping No. 13 Foothills Composite 87-75, then defeated No. 5 Calgary Bishop O’Byrne 99-84. Cougars will play No. 1 Edmonton Jasper Place in the semifinals tonight.

No. 10 LCI Rams opened play by upsetting No. 7 Calgary St. Mary’s 93-84. However, in the quarters, the Rams were edged 76-72 by No. 2 Calgary Western Canada.

South Zone runner-up Raymond Comets, seeded ninth, fell 106-91 to No. 8 Edmonton St. Francis Xavier while No. 12 Medicine Hat Mohawks were defeated 93-79 by Bishop O’Byrne.

In 4A Girls play, the only local team to advance were the No. 6 Raymond Comets, who edged No. 11 Sherwood Park Salisbury 67-65. Raymond then fell 71-56 to No. 3 Western Canada in the quarter-finals Thursday night.

Magrath Pandas, seeded seventh, were defeated 55-50 by No. 10 St. Albert Paul Kane while No. 8 LCI Clippers fell to No. 9 Calgary St. Mary’s 77-71.

Cardston Cougars, the 12th seed, were defeated 76-50 by No. 5 Calgary Centennial.

3A Girls at Athabasca

No. 1 Taber W.R. Myers Rebels advanced to today’s semifinals with an 89-57 win over Holy Rosary and will play the winner of Morinville and Monsignor McCoy of Medicine Hat today at 4 p.m.

3A boys at Brooks

Taber W.R. Myers Rebels, seeded seventh, needed double overtime to defeat No. 10 Holy Trinity 112-97 in their opener on Thursday.

Rebels then upended 103-56 by No. 2 Edmonton Christian in the quarter-finals later Thursday.

2A Girls at La Crete

At the 2A girls provincials in La Crete, the South Zone champion and second-ranked Kainai Lady Warriors and third-ranked Immanuel Christian Eagles received a bye Thursday and play today. The Eagles play at 12:30 p.m. against No. 6 Pigeon Lake and the Lady Warriors face the winner of Didsbury and Glenmary at 2:15 p.m.

2A Boys at High Level

South Zone champion and number-one ranked Immanuel Christian Eagles received a bye and will play Holy Cross today at 10:45 a.m.

The fourth-ranked Claresholm Willow Creek Cobras also had a bye and open today at 9 a.m. against La Crete.

1A Boys at Stirling

Host Stirling Lakers defeated No. 8 St. Mary’s of Vegreville 92-67 on Thursday and will play No. 12 St. Mary’s of Sexsmith in the semifinals tonight at 7 p.m.

Also advancing to the semis was No. 3 Coaldale Christian Titans who downed No. 6 Acme 76-67 and will take on No. 2 Parkland Immanuel Christian today at 5 p.m.

In other action, No. 9 Nanton J.T. Foster was defeated 91-60 by No. 8 Vegreville St. Mary’s, while No. 12 St. Mary’s of Sexsmith upset No. 5 Olds Koinonia 61-46.

No. 6 Acme rolled over No. 11 New Norway 105-68 while No. 7 Hay Lakes defeated No. 10 Breton 87-66.

1A Girls at Paradise Valley

Top-seeded Stirling Lakers, No. 3 Foremost Forettes and No. 4 Milk River Erle Rivers all open play in the quarter-finals today.

Stirling plays No. 8 Menno Simons, Foremost meets No. 6 Central Alberta Christian and Erle Rivers takes on No. 5 Grand Trunk.
