Coby Iwaasa is raising his racket at the Pan American Racquetball Championships.
The Lethbridge athlete is part of a two-man, four-woman Canadian team taking part at the event in Barranquilla, Colombia which began Saturday and runs until this Saturday.
Iwaasa is joined by Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau, Que. as well as Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg, Danielle Drury of Saskatoon, Michle Morissette of Baie-Comeau and Erin Geeraert of Calgary.
Iwaasa and Murray will play in singles and doubles for the men’s team.
In singles play, Iwaasa lost 8-15, 7-15 to Andres Acuna of Costa Rica Saturday, but rebounded with a 15-11, 15-6 decision over Luis Felipe Zea of Venezuela Sunday.
In doubles play, Iwaasa and Murray lost 12-15, 15-13, 10-11 to Conrrado Moscoso and Rolland Keller of Bolivia Saturday, but defeated Jesus Icaza and Carlos Medrano of Honduras 15-1, 15-2 Sunday.
Iwaasa had been away from racquetball for a couple of years but returned to his position on the national team and in the rankings. He has also represented Canada internationally this season.
The first few days of competition will determine seeding for the elimination round which will begin Wednesday.
Results of the Pan Am Championships impacts the number of athletes named to the Pan Am Games team for Lima July 26-Aug. 11 and also influences the seeding for that tournament.
