The Lethbridge Bulls season has come to a close one game short of the final.
The Bulls were downed 4-3 by the Okotoks Dawgs in Game 3 of the Western Canadian Baseball League Western Conference final Tuesday night in Okotoks.
The Bulls were attempting to come back from a 1-0 series deficit after forcing Tuesday night’s deciding game with a 5-1 win Monday night at Spitz Stadium.
On Tuesday, it seemed a possible Bulls’ comeback was in the cards when Lethbridge erased a 3-0 deficit with one run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. But the Dawgs added the winning run in the sixth and Okotoks reliever Justin Hammergren shut it down in the final four innings to preserve the win and send the Dawgs to the WCBL final.
After falling behind 3-0 after three innings, the Bulls finally got to Okotoks starter Brandon Desjardins.
The Bulls got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Riley Jepson reached first on an error and scored on a Kaleb Warden double.
Lethbridge evened it up in the top of the fifth. Hank Forrest tripled to score Jaret Semeniuk from first and then tied it at 3-3 on a two-out single from Jepson.
But the Dawgs retook the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth.
With Bulls reliever Chase Florendine on for starter Ben Erwin, Dawgs J.T. Patterson singled with two out, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Tristan Peters to pull ahead 4-3.
The Dawgs got their bats going in the first inning as Peters doubled to lead off and scored on a single from Jacob Melton.
Okotoks went up 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
Dane Tofteland doubled to score Melton before William Hollis kept the two-out rally alive with a single to score Tofteland.
The Dawgs outhit the Bulls 8-5.
Batting ninth, Forrest was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
Peters, Melton and Hollis each had two hits for the Dawgs.
Erwin went five innings for the Bulls, giving up three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out eight.
Florendine went three innings in taking the loss, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out three.
Hammergren got the win for Okotoks, giving up two hits and striking out seven.
The Dawgs advance to the WCBL final to face the winner of the series between the Regina Red Sox and Swift Current 57s.
The 57s defeated the Red Sox 4-2 Tuesday night in Swift Current.
Game 3 goes tonight in Regina at 7:05 p.m.
