Not even a hole-in-one was enough to unseed Kris Wasylowich and Doug Costa as the Southern Alberta Best Ball champions.
The Picture Butte Golf Club duo earned this year’s championship with a 1 up victory over the Lethbridge Country Club’s Darin Bertschi and Jeff Masse as the Country Club wrapped up its 33rd annual Tony Roma’s Southern Alberta Best Ball Championship Tuesday.
Bertschi scored an ace on the 12th hole, but he and Masse came up just short of knocking off the now five-time champions. Wasylowich and Costa teamed up for previous wins in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.
In the new seniors division, Ross Blackmer and Greg Maxwell of Magrath Golf Club scored a 3 and 2 win over Paradise Canyon Golf Resort’s Wayne Petersen and Brian Hancock in the final.
In the regular division, Lethbridge Country Club head pro Eric Porter and partner Brad Plausteiner carded a nine-under par 63 for the win. Picture Butte Golf Club’s Randy Hauck and Kelly Schmidt recorded an eight-under par 64 to capture the senior medal play event.
All teams who attended the final day competed in a gross best ball medal play event in which each team recorded the lowest of the two players’ scores on each hole to form a team score.
A total of 32 two-man teams played in the regular division and another 16 teams competed in the inaugural senior division.
Teams representing eight Lethbridge area golf clubs competed in a match play bracket format for the past three months culminating with final matches being played Tuesday.
Teams who wish to reserve a spot in the 2020 Tony Roma’s Southern Alberta Best Ball Championship can email co-ordinator Brian Huculak by Aug. 31.
