The Red Deer Rebels have taken Game 1 of a two-game pre-season series over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
The Rebels edged the Canes 3-2 as the teams skated into their Western Hockey League exhibition seasons Friday night in Red Deer.
Former Hurricane Josh Tarzwell scored 9:17 into the third period for what stood up as the winner and his second of the night. The teams get ready to do it all again in the rematch tonight at 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.
Hurricanes defenceman Rylan Thiessen and Alex Thacker scored for the Hurricanes in the road loss Friday.
Thiessen opened the scoring 9:48 into the first, but the Rebels evened it up before the first intermission on Tarzwell’s first of the night with 1:57 left in the first.
Red Deer took the lead on a goal from another former Cane as Brett Davis scored 1:04 into the second on the man advantage.
It only took a little over two minutes for Lethbridge to respond when Thacker – acquired from the Swift Current Broncos in the off-season – deadlocked it at 2-2 after two periods.
The Rebel’s power play clicked a second time midway through the third on Tarzwell’s winner.
Red Deer was 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Hurricanes were 0-for-4.
The Rebels outshot the Hurricanes 33-28
Bryan Thomson got the nod in goal for the Hurricanes, making 30 saves.
After tonight’s game the Hurricanes are back at the Enmax Centre Friday at 7 p.m. when the Broncos come to town.
The Canes complete their pre-season Sept. 14 in Swift Current and open the regular season at home Sept. 20 against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
