The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up the exhibition season with a close loss.
The Hurricanes were edged 2-1 by the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League preseason play Saturday night in Swift Current.
With the loss, the Canes cap off their four-game exhibition schedule at 1-2-1-0 and comes after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Broncos Friday night at the Enmax Centre.
The Broncos finish the preseason at 5-0-0-1.
On Saturday night in Swift Current the Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the first period.
Joona Kiviniemi scored 5:45 in and Carter Chorney netted his third of the preseason at the 10:02 mark on the power play.
After netting two goals on the power play in Friday night’s loss, the Hurricanes special teams went to work in the latter half of the second period as Noah Boyko scored shorthanded at 12:53.
The teams exchanged nine shots each in the third period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the way as the Canes outshot the Broncos 38-25.
Hurricanes second-year goaltender Carl Tetachuk stopped 20 of 22 shots, while Swift Current’s Isaac Poulter kicked out 37 of 38.
Canes backup Bryan Thomson came in for Tetachuk after the Broncos went ahead 2-0 and played the last 9:58 of the first period, turning aside all nine shots he faced before Tetachuk came back in the second period.
Forwards Alex Thacker and Chase Wheatcroft led the Hurricanes in preseason scoring with one goal and three assists each in four games.
First-year defenceman Rylan Thiessen had three goals, while import player Oliver Okuliar and overage defenceman Koletrane Wilson each had three assists.
The Hurricanes open the regular season Friday when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.
