Copperheads light it up with two wins

The Coaldale Copperheads scored a bunch of goals and got a shutout to boot.

It added up to a 2-0 weekend for the Copperheads in Heritage Junior Hockey League play.

The Copperheads blanked the Lomond Lakers 5-0 Friday night in Claresholm and returned to the Coaldale Sportsplex Saturday night to hand the Stettler Lightning a 10-3 loss.

The wins improve Coaldale to 8-3-1 and into a tie for second place in the Southern Division with the 8-4-1 Cochrane Generals. The Copperheads remain seven points back of the 12-0-0 Okotoks Bisons.

On Friday in Claresholm, Copperheads goaltender Ethan Barrows stopped all 18 shots he faced to post the shutout.

Ethan Klemen scored twice for Coaldale. Brandyn Howg, Isaac Benoit and Isiah Day Chief added the other Copperheads goals.

Mason Sande chipped in with two assists for Coaldale.

At the Coaldale Sportsplex Saturday, the Copperheads scored five third period goals to hit double digits.

Sande scored twice and added three assists for a five-point night and Benoit had two goals and four points. Howg also had two goals and Jayden Bexte had five assists.

Kaden Shield, Tyler Anderson, James Halverson and Ty Abbott added singles for Coaldale. Abbott also had two assists.

Broc Merkl had 25 saves in the win.

The Copperheads face a big test Friday night when they head to Okotoks to try and hand the Bisons their first loss of the season. Game time is 8 p.m.

The team is back home Saturday when the Red Deer Vipers visit the Coaldale Sportsplex at 8:30 p.m.
