The Southern Alberta Express midget female elite hockey team captured the gold medal in the AA division last weekend at the Regina Female Challenge.
The Express consist of players from Medicine Hat, Irvine, Foremost, Enchant, Vauxhall, Duchess, Tilley, Lethbridge, Fort Macleod and Cardston.
Express opened the weekend with a 4-1 win over the Manitoba Southeast Sharks as Brittney Kambeitz and Kendal Pierson each scored a pair of goals. Earning the win in net was Devyn Amundson turning away 18 of 19 shots.
In their second game, Express downed the Swift Current Wildcats 4-1 on goals from Quincey Williams, Kambeitz, Madison King, and Avery Sande while Hayley Whelen earned the win in net turning away 18 shots.
Express improved to 3-0 with a 6-2 victory over host Regina Rebels as King scored a pair of goals while Pierson, Megan Draffin, Payton Kruger and Quinn Odland added singles. Amundson faced 19 shots for her second win of the tourney.
In their last round-robin game, Express edged the Rocky Mountain Raiders of Okotoks 4-3 victory on goals from Kambeitz, Draffin, Amy Craig and King. Whelen earned the win stopping 22 shots.
The victory earned the Express a spot in the gold-medal game where they faced the Regina Rebels for a second time and were again victorious with a 4-1 win.
Kambeitz, Draffin, Pierson and Janaya Laqua were the goal scorers while Whelen stopped 24 shots in goal to earn the win.
