Copperheads remain in the chase for second

In the battle for second place in the Heritage Junior Hockey League Southern Division, the Coaldale Copperheads kept pace.

The Copperheads earned two home wins last weekend, defeating the Sylvan Lake Wranglers 6-2 Saturday night at the Coaldale Sportsplex and following that up with a 5-3 win over the High River Flyers Sunday night.

With the wins the Copperheads are 12-6-1 and tied with the Cochrane Generals (12-5-1) for second in the South, 13 points behind the still undefeated 19-0-0 Okotoks Bisons.

On Saturday, Ethan Klemen paced the Copperheads with two goals and an assist. Thomas Johnson, Brandyn Howg, Jayden Bexte and Tyson Meier added the other Coaldale goals.

Howg added an assist for two points and Clayton Nevil and Isiah Day Chief each had two helpers.

Copperheads goaltender Ethan Barrows stopped 26 of 28 shots to earn the win.

On Sunday the Copperheads scored three times in the second period and twice more in the third to post the win.

Howg, Isaac Benoit, Jason Creighton, Ty Abbott and Klemen scored the Copperheads goals.

Howg, Benoit and Creighton each had an assist for a two-point night.

Broc Merkl made 18 saves to post the win.

The Copperheads head to Didsbury Saturday to take on the Mountainview Colts (10-6-1) and are in Rocky Mountain House Sunday to face the 2-14-0 Rams.
